The Unbreakable Boy: An In-Depth Exploration of Hope and Family Cohesion

The film, now streaming on Flixtor Movies, is based on a memoir from 2014 co-written by Scott Michael LeRette, who aims to convey his experiences of fatherhood and personal struggles while also shedding light on his son, Austin. Austin was born with brittle bone disease and later diagnosed with autism. The memoir is titled “The Unbreakable Boy,” yet it is noteworthy that Austin has a relatively minor presence in the narrative. LaRette chooses to center the story around his own journey, which poses a challenge for writer/director Jon Gunn as he attempts to adhere to the conventions of inspirational cinema to maintain viewer engagement. At times, the film feels disjointed, making its artificiality hard to accept. Initially, Scott is focused on his own life until he encounters Teresa, striving to win her affection. A few dates lead to an intimate encounter, resulting in an unexpected pregnancy before they truly get to know one another, thus placing the responsibility of raising Austin upon them.
