The Universal Owner — 2026-07-30: Cover, Not the Level
from The Universal Owner · host Universal Asset Owners
Everyone is quoting the same barrel number this morning: US crude inventories, lowest since September 2018. The number is right; the measure is wrong. Once refinery throughput is accounted for, days of cover is 23.3 - a full day thinner than the September 2018 week the level is being compared to, and the thinnest since 14 September 2018. Also this episode: the FOMC's 9-3 hold, with three votes to raise; why thin cover is not one trade across producers, refiners and midstream; and why the funding-ratio arithmetic runs the opposite way to the common shorthand - by discount regime.
