The Unknown By Riley Sager Explained: Full Plot Summary, Ending, Twists And Meaning
from Taylor Tailored Hosted by Taylor Tailored
The Island Mystery, Ending And Real Meaning The Unknown is a psychological suspense and horror-tinged mystery novel by Riley Sager, published in the United States by Dutton on 4 August 2026. Penguin Random House lists the hardcover at 368 pages, while the UK edition was published by Hodder & Stoughton. It is Sager’s tenth thriller under the Riley Sager name. The author deliberately approached the novel as a celebration of his earlier work, describing it as his own version of an “Eras Tour”, with settings, themes and smaller references designed to echo previous novels without requiring newcomers to recognise them. The surface premise is pure gothic mystery. In 1926, five women supposedly vanished from New Avalon, a remote island on Lake Faraday in Vermont. All that remained were their dresses hanging from an enormous oak tree and a diary attributed to one of them, Daisy Rue. One hundred years later, struggling actress Marin Keane arrives with a film cast intending to recreate the mystery. What follows is less a traditional ghost story than an elaborate collision between three competing narratives: what people believe happened in 1926, what appears to be happening on the island in 2026, and what several characters secretly need everyone else to believe.
