The Unsolved Case of the Axeman of New Orleans: Play Jazz or Die

Between 1918 and 1919, New Orleans was terrorized by an unidentified killer who slipped into homes in the dead of night and attacked sleeping victims with axes, razors, and whatever weapons he could find inside. Many of the victims were Italian and Sicilian immigrants, often grocers and their families, fueling theories that the crimes may have been motivated by prejudice, extortion, or organized crime. But no clear motive was ever proven, and the killer’s identity remained a mystery. The attacks were savage and unpredictable. Victims were struck in their beds. Doors were broken or panels removed to gain entry. Some survived. Others, including Joseph and Catherine Maggio, were killed. The violence spread fear through neighborhoods as police struggled to determine whether they were dealing with one killer or several unrelated attacks. Then came the letter. In March 1919, a letter claiming to be from the Axeman was published in a New Orleans newspaper. The writer boasted that he was not human, claimed an affection for jazz, and announced that on a specific night he would kill again—unless the occupants of a home were playing jazz music. New Orleans responded the only way New Orleans could. On the appointed night, homes, bars, and dance halls filled with jazz as terrified residents played music in hopes of being spared. No Axeman murder was reported that night. Whether the letter actually came from the killer or was an elaborate hoax has never been conclusively established. By October 1919, the attacks abruptly stopped. The Axeman was never identified, never arrested, and never brought to justice. More than a century later, the case remains one of the strangest unsolved serial murder mysteries in American history—a terrifying mixture of violence, immigration, folklore, and the music that helped define New Orleans.
