The Unsung Builders of Norfolk Botanical Garden | Spokane News

In a powerful tribute to the forgotten heroes who built the Norfolk Botanical Garden with hand tools and grit, the garden unveils a stunning Dale Chihuly glass chandelier — a vibrant homage to the 220 African American workers who transformed a swamp into paradise for just 25 cents an hour. Their stories, long silenced by hardship and silence, are now being reclaimed through outreach to descendants, including Mary Elizabeth Ferguson, who lived to 97. Her daughter recalls how her mother initially refused to return — haunted by the snakes, insects, and grueling conditions. This year marks a turning point: the memorial shines as a beacon of pride, honoring every soul who laid the foundation — and ensuring their legacy blooms forever.
