In today’s edition of The Update Journal… the calendar says May 1st, but emotionally? We’re somewhere between late August burnout and mid-October sports-induced heartbreak. The Mets spent April reminding us that hope is a dangerous game, and Mets fans once again finding creative new ways to say “it’s early” through gritted teeth. Meanwhile, over on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Olivia Benson gets hit with a punishment so confusing it makes you question if the writers spun a wheel labeled “accountability” and just went with whatever it landed on.And just when the chaos starts to feel like too much, we close things out with a gentle reminder: unclench your jaw, lower your blood pressure, and remember… it is literally the first day of May.Plenty of time for things to get worse. Or better. Probably worse. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Friday, a massive, fiery explosion at a house in Queens sent several NYPD officers flying through the air as they were responding to a call of a man inside armed with a knife and the smell of gas.At the Harvey Weinstein retrial, his accuser struggled on the witness stand after being confronted with a previously undisclosed, soul-searching note she wrote to herself two days after the alleged assault in 2013. And in Washington, President Trump swiftly signed a bipartisan legislation to fund much of the Department of Homeland Security, but not its immigration enforcement operations, shortly after the package won final approval in the House, ending the longest agency shutdown in history.
