The US Navy vs Typhoon Cobra in 1944 | Episode 7
from Doomsday: History's Most Dangerous Podcast · host Brad Choma
Weather prediction is hard, and chances are your local weather person has a terrible track record and you think they stink at their job. Well, the weatherman in today’s episode would like you to hold your judgement – and their beer.If you like shipwrecks, sharks and celebrity guest stars, this is the episode for you. In this episode: you will hear about some pretty casual olde-timey racism, the strange tale of a man swimming after a torpedo in hopes they could blow up together, and the dietary habits of sharks. It’s not every day we get to do an episode that contains shipwrecks, carnage, blind mistakes and untold heroism. But also, we warned you that “bad day at work” would become a pretty common theme in this podcast. We think we over delivered on this episode. In this episode: we learn of delirious sailors adrift in a life boat who find an onion bobbing in the water. It was because of this anecdote that many years later, I would do a video for Patreons comparing the experience of eating a purple vs. yellow onion like an apple. The verdict was “who cares” as it turns out, you eat that much uncooked onion in a single sitting will destroy your ability or desire to taste onion ever again. It’s been five months since I did this and I still look at them sideways. This was also an episode that kind of tested my ground rules for the show. I don’t cover acts of crime or terrorism or military misadventure, but I made a strong exception in this case because the victims were military - not the cause.––––– THANK YOU. Most shows survive at the whim of production companies and corporate sponsors, built from the top down. Doomsday doesn’t exist because some network exec believes in it – it exists because actual people do. It's built from the bottom up, and it’s been my privilege to bring you these stories. Just you, me, and a microphone. I don’t do this for you, so much as I do this because of you.
