The Usual at the Midway Diner

A slow night at the Midway Diner, mile marker 42 on a forgotten stretch of Route 9 in western Pennsylvania. January 2019, just after 2 AM. The snow had stopped an hour earlier, leaving the parking lot a sheet of black ice under the single buzzing floodlight. I was the only customer, nursing coffee in the back booth, when the door chimed and a man walked in who looked like he had been walking for days.
