The Valley of Fear opens with Sherlock Holmes decoding a desperate cipher warning before a Sussex squire named John Douglas is found murdered in his moated manor. Inspector MacDonald and Holmes descend on Birlstone, where contradictory evidence, a missing wedding ring, and a loyal friend's suspicious behaviour point to a conspiracy within the household.
