She joined the Seabees (the Navy’s Construction Battalion) specifically to work in the building trades and to ensure her service remained land-based.Duty in Guantanamo Bay: Her first assignment was in Cuba with Public Works. She spent her days repairing perimeter fencing and maintaining runways. She recalls a vivid memory of a close call where she had to quickly clear a runway as a massive C-141 transport plane began an unscheduled landing.Humanitarian Impact: While stationed in Antigua, Lori’s mission shifted to disaster relief. Following the destruction of Hurricane Hugo, she volunteered her construction skills to help rebuild local villages and orphanages.Facing the Past: Lori speaks with profound honesty about surviving Military Sexual Trauma (MST). The experience left her with years of deep-seated anger and led to a period of struggling with alcohol and a complete loss of faith.The Path to Healing: A later mental health crisis became the catalyst for change. She sought help through a VA inpatient program, where she began the difficult work of recovery. Guided by the memory of her grandfather’s faith, she eventually found the strength to forgive both herself and those who had wronged her.Personal Philosophy: Lori lives by the motto "Let Go and Let God," which she even has tattooed as a reminder. She explains that true peace came when she learned to stop fighting for control and started listening for spiritual direction.Serving Fellow Veterans: Today, Lori utilizes her mechanical skills through a family-run mobile RV repair business.
