The case, however, quickly tangles into a complicated story of love, revenge, and sacrifice. Roy Underwood, a manipulative theater patron, claims Virginia stole the jewelry, while she insists they were gifts from a past affair. As Johnny investigates, he meets Virginia’s fiercely protective friend, Phil Kelly, a loyal cab driver who tries to shield her from Underwood’s vengeance. Virginia’s desperate attempt to repay the value of a sold bracelet takes a dark turn when Underwood is found murdered.
