The Voice You Learn Slowly
from Between Bread and Stone · host Stephen R. Brewer, PsyD
Good Shepherd Sunday is often softened into stained glass: a gentle man, a crook, a lamb over his shoulders. John’s Gospel gives us something sharper. The shepherd is known by voice, by patience, by presence over time. The thief moves quickly. The shepherd stays. This week’s episode follows the slow pattern of recognition across Eastertide. Mary needed her name spoken. Thomas needed the wound. The disciples on the Emmaus road needed bread broken at the table. In John 10, the disciples do not understand the image at first, so Jesus tries again. He restates. He waits. His patience is part of the revelation. That matters in an age of urgent voices. Christian nationalism demands loyalty before discernment. Political religion turns Scripture into branding. Empire takes the shepherd’s voice and converts it into command. But Jesus describes something different: a door, a threshold, a voice learned through relationship, and abundant life that no institution gets to ration. In this episode we ask how we learn to tell the shepherd from the thief, and why patience may be one of the clearest signs of the real voice. You are welcome here.
