On August 25th, the Coral Gables City Commission voted 4-0 to advance the University of Miami's 30-year development agreement. The mayor called it a truly special moment in the city's history. He wasn't wrong — but the story didn't end that night. Here's what Miami actually won: roughly 3.7 million square feet of additional building capacity, an enrollment threshold jumping from 13,000 to 17,500, permission for a hospital of up to 100 beds on campus with no separate use vote, and the 5.52-acre Lee Lincoln field becoming Centennial Park — permanently protected, and the largest city-owned park in Coral Gables history. And the part most coverage skipped: August 25th was FIRST reading. This package has to pass the commission twice.
