The Waitress at the Diner on Serpentine Road

Luna recalls a summer night in 2003 at a diner on Serpentine Road, just outside a town called Mercy, Ohio. A woman in a blue dress came in at 2 AM, drenched from a rain that hadn't fallen. She ordered a slice of pecan pie but didn't touch it. She talked about a bridge she'd crossed, a bridge she swore wasn't there before. The woman asked if the diner had a back door. Luna showed her to the kitchen exit. The last thing the woman said was 'You didn't see me.' But Luna didn't see her leave either—the woman was just gone, and the back door was locked from the inside. The pecan pie sat on the counter, untouched, until the morning shift threw it out. Luna still wonders about that bridge.
