The Walking Women and the Doctors Who Tried to Stop Them

from The Habit Healers · host Laurie Marbas, MD, MBA

Walking after eating is one of the simplest things you can do for your blood sugar, and the research says the timing matters more than the distance. In this episode I trace that idea back to a nineteenth century medical mistake that told sick women to lie still and do nothing.I’m Dr. Laurie Marbas, and this is one of my favorite stories in medicine, because it shows how long it can take for science to catch up with what people already knew in their bodies. In the 1880s, a diagnosis called neurasthenia was treated with weeks of enforced bed rest for women, while men with the same diagnosis were sent West to ride, hunt, and work outdoors. We now know what prolonged immobility does to cardiovascular capacity, insulin resistance, and muscle. We also know what movement does for depression, and what a short walk at the right moment does for post-meal glucose. Three groups of women figured out the movement part long before the studies existed, and I want to tell you about all three. What you’ll learn in this episode:* Why prolonged bed rest damages cardiovascular fitness, insulin sensitivity, and muscle mass* What a large 2024 analysis found about physical activity and depressive symptoms* Why walking after a meal lowers blood sugar more than the same walk at another time of day* Why the effect is strongest after the evening meal* The exact fifteen minute post-meal walking habit to start this weekDr. Marbas Substack Article: https://drlauriemarbas.substack.com/p/what-if-the-most-important-discoveryCheck out the Habit Healers Community: https://www.skool.com/habithealers/about Get full access to The Habit Healers at drlauriemarbas.substack.com/subscribe
