In which the dreadful nature of the Martians' heat-ray is unveiled, its invisible and devastating power reducing all combustible matter into flame and ruin with merciless precision, while a growing crowd at Horsell Common witnesses in horrified fascination the destruction wrought close at hand. The panic and chaos that follow as the beam sweeps towards them turn the crowd to a desperate flight, marred by tragic loss amid the confusion and terror beneath the darkening sky.
