In which Mr Bold, having yielded to a tearful entreaty, visits the archdeacon at Plumstead Episcopi with a heavy heart and a resolve to abandon his legal action, only to find himself met with scorn, reproach, and an imperious refusal to let the matter drop. The meeting, set against a richly described ecclesiastical backdrop, leaves Bold crestfallen and fiercely wounded in spirit, much to the amusement and defiance of the archdeacon’s lively children.
