The Watcher House Letters
from Unsolved and Unforgotten · host Carly Killoran
In 2014, Derek and Maria Broaddus purchased a large family home at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey. Before they could move in, they began receiving anonymous letters from someone calling themselves “The Watcher.” The writer claimed that their family had observed the house for generations and appeared to know details about the renovations, the Broaddus children, and the family’s movements. As the letters became more threatening, the family stopped bringing their children to the property and refused to move in. Police questioned neighbors, examined DNA and handwriting evidence, and investigated several possible suspects, but no one was conclusively linked to the messages. The uncertainty transformed the entire neighborhood into a source of suspicion.Unable to live in the house or sell it without a major loss, the Broadduses spent years dealing with financial pressure, legal disputes, private investigations, and public accusations that they may have written the letters themselves—a claim they strongly denied. In 2019, they finally sold the property for significantly less than they had paid.No further Watcher letters were publicly reported after the sale, leaving the writer’s identity and motive unknown. The case remains disturbing because the sender never needed to enter the house or carry out a physical attack. A few carefully written letters were enough to destroy the family’s sense of safety and drive them away from their dream home.
