The weight of religion that Jesus never wanted us to carry

from reConstructing Faith with Mat Koenig · host Mat Koenig

In today's live Bible Study with Mat we are going to talk about carrying the weight of religion, and the joy of trading that for walking with Jesus.   A lot of people just don't want to walk into a church. They have a variety of reasons. Some of them are...  They've been hurt by someone who called themselves Christian. They've been hurt by someone in leadership at a church. They've seen people use the Bible as a weapon. Sometimes the stories seem too supernatural, or too harry-potter-esque for people to be wiling to believe them.  Or, sometimes people aren't interested in going to church, reading the Bible or learning about Jesus because they've misunderstood things that were said, heard something out of context, or they've just had a misguided notion about who Jesus is because we (Christians) are still imperfect people and truth be told we don't always represent Jesus well.   Whatever the reason, Jesus had a lot to say about religious 'know it alls' and today we're going to talk about the weight that "religion" piles on people, that God never intended for us to carry.  Better yet, we're going to see the truth about how Jesus wants us to handle that in our lives today.   Today we're reading from Matthew 11, and I'm using the Message Paraphrase/Translation by Eugene Peterson.
