The Weight of the Pack
from The Sportsman's Light · host Patrick
Backcountry hunters obsess over pack weight, and for good reason. Every unnecessary ounce costs energy on the mountain. The veteran learns to lay everything out before the trip and ask one ruthless question of each item: do I actually need to carry this? Most men are hauling invisible packs far heavier than anything on a mountain — old guilt, unforgiveness, anxiety about things they cannot control, the need to prove themselves, shame that should have been dropped years ago. They wake up tired because they sleep with the pack on.Jesus's invitation is the great gear shakedown of the soul: come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened. Lay it out. Hand it over. His yoke is easy and His burden is light — not because life gets easy, but because He carries what you were never designed to haul. Do the shakedown. Drop the weight. You have a long way to go, and He never intended you to carry all that.Prayer:Jesus, I am carrying weight You never asked me to carry — guilt You already forgave, worries You already own, burdens I picked up out of pride.I'm laying the pack down. Give me Your rest, and teach me to travel light — carrying only what You place on me. Amen.Challenge:Do a 'pack shakedown' on paper: list every burden you're currently carrying. Circle the ones Jesus never asked you to haul — old guilt, others' opinions, outcomes you can't control. Pray through the list and consciously hand each circled item to Him.
