The Well at the Cypress Grove Cemetery

In the summer of 2004, on a back road outside Milledgeville, Georgia, I pulled over at a cemetery I didn't know existed. The gate was open. The grass was high. And behind the oldest section, hidden under a tangle of kudzu, was a well. Not a grave. A well. The man who found me there told me about the girl they called Lydia, who went down into that well in 1887 and came back up three days later with mud in her lungs and a word carved into her palm. He told me she never spoke again. But she wrote. On every surface she could find. And when she died, they buried her facedown so she couldn't write her way back out. I didn't believe him.
