The Widow at Paint Fork Gap

November of 2019, I was tracing an old postal route through the mountains near Paint Fork Gap, a place that exists mostly on paper now. The road ended at a house that shouldn't have been there — hand-split oak logs, a tin roof, a porch light burning at three in the afternoon. The woman inside, Delia, offered me coffee and told me she'd been waiting for someone to bring her mail. She hadn't left the property in forty-two years. I sat at her kitchen table while she told me about the highway department's survey in '77, the letter they left pinned to her door, and the government men who came back every spring to take measurements. She showed me the letters she'd written over the decades, replies to the ones she never received. When I left, she asked me to mail them. I still haven't.
