“The Wilderness”
from "Prayer Changes Everything" Devotion for Today · host Y.E.S. Jesus Youth Encountering Savior Jesus
Sept.15, 2026 Daily Devotional: “The Wilderness” Deuteronomy 8:2 "And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in yourheart, whether you would keep his commandments or not." Nobody asks for a wilderness season. When life feels dry, uncertain, or stripped down to the bare essentials, our immediate reaction is usually to pray for a way out. We assume the desert is a sign that something has gone wrong, or that God has temporarily stepped away. Yet Moses reminds the Israelites—and us—that the wilderness was not a detour; it was a intentional pathway. God did not just tolerate their forty years in the desert; He led them through it. The wilderness serves specific spiritual purposes; To humble us and to reveal our hearts. Comfort and abundance can easily lull us into a false sense of self-reliance. In the desert, where there are no natural safety nets, we are forced to realize that every breath, every meal, and every step forward depends entirely on God. It is easy to be faithful when things are easy. The trials of the wilderness expose what is truly inside us. God tests us not to gain information He lacks, but to reveal to us where our trust actually lieswhen the extra comforts disappear. Deuteronomy 8:2 addresses the purpose behind Israel’s 40-year journey through the desert: God uses seasons ofhardship and waiting to shape human character, refine faith, and build complete dependence on Him. It frames difficult or uncertain seasons of wildernesses not as punishment or abandonment, but as purposeful preparation. It emphasizes that physical lack or trial is often the precise environmentneeded to reveal a person's true motives and build deep, lasting reliance on God. If you find yourself in a dry season right now, do not assume God is absent. He uses the desert to strip away reliance on temporary things so that you can learn the absolutedependability of His presence. Look back and take five minutes today to reflect on a past trial you survived. How did God sustain you when you thought you wouldn't make it? Examine your heart and ask God to show you what this current season is revealing about your trust. Are you relying on your own strength or His provision?
