In the summer of 2007, a tow-truck driver named Alvaro picked up a stranded woman near Borrego Springs. She stood alone at a payphone that hadn't worked since the 90s, but the receiver was pressed to her ear and she was speaking in a low, steady voice. He waited by his truck for fifteen minutes before she hung up and asked for a ride to a crossroads that didn't appear on any map. The road she pointed to was unpaved and lined with ocotillo.
