It was the autumn of 2021 when I found myself helping a friend move into a fixer-upper on Chestnut Street in the small town of Harwood, New York. The house was narrow and tall, with a chain lock on the inside of the front door that no one could explain. Every morning, she would unlock it to leave for work. Every evening, she'd come home to find it fastened again. At first she blamed the landlord, then the wind, then her own forgetfulness. But the chain wasn't broken. And the marks on the frame — faint, repeated, just above the strike plate — told a different story.
