Theo Kocken: Your Hundred Year Life

from 4-Quarter Lives · host Avivah Wittenberg-Cox

On 4-Quarter Lives this week Avivah Wittenberg-Cox talks with Professor Theo Kocken, about his fascinating new film ‘Your Hundred Year Life’. Theo comes to the issue of longevity with a business and academic background. He is professor of Risk Management at VU University Amsterdam, founder of the Anglo-Dutch pension investment & risk management firm Cardano and chairman of the Cardano Development Foundation. He is also an extraordinary professor at NWU University (South Africa). Before founding Cardano in 2000, he worked in the banking sector, including as head of Market Risk at ING and Rabobank.Theo is not, however, your average economist or academic. In addition to writing several books on risk management and pension fund design, he uses alternative media to get his ideas across to a wider and more general audience. Together with Monty Python’s Terry Jones, in 2015 he produced the documentary “Boom Bust Boom” on financial crises and endogenous financial instability. Following this he identified the worldwide increase in longevity as a major issue for individuals and for society and in 2022 released his film ‘Your Hundred Year Life’. This documentary is a mind-blowing representation of the parlous state of old-age provision, all over the world. It mixes personal stories and expert analysis with humour and optimism. Highlighting the challenges for rich and poor countries alike, it argues that it is not too late to rethink the concept of retirement and old age.  Some Relevant Links:* Theo Kocken has generously made a link to his film ‘Your Hundred Year Life’ available free to paying subscribers to Avivah’s weekly ‘Elderberries’ blog. The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene (Full Audiobook) Robert Greene Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this multi-million-copy New York Times bestseller is the definitive manual for anyone interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control – from the author of The Laws of Human Nature. In the book that People magazine proclaimed “beguiling” and “fascinating,” Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum. Some laws teach the need for prudence (“Law 1: Never Outshine the Master”), others teach the value of confidence (“Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness”), and many recommend absolute self-preservation (“Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally”). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in t Wounded Warriors of the Cross Gary Pastoral and clergy mental health is a mostly ignored area, especially by those who live their lives as pastors in the clergy. The stigma of mental health within those who serve in the shadow of the cross is something that invokes the stigma of fear. Many of those in the clergy will choose to suffer in their despair rather than reaching out for help. Sometimes those suffering choose to wait until it's too late to get the real help that they need. At Wounded Warriors of the Cross our mission is to lift the stigma and the veil of silence that encompasses clergy mental health and assist those who suffer in silence. Wounded Warriors of the Cross is here to shed the light of Christ's love into those dark places.
