Date: 11.7.10 Preacher: Kris Martens Title: Theology of Mockery | Luke 22:63-65 The lead up, the event & the follow-up of Jesus' crucifixion were filled with mockery. This included verbal jabs, visual punches (the sign, the robe, the crown) & physical blows (beard-pulling, spitting, etc). The mockery of Jesus was relentless - designed to shame the person & work of the Messiah. It was also prophesied & necessary to the completion of the Missio Dei. In this sermon we'll look at the dynamics of mockery in the Bible & in our own context, working towards a theology of scorn. We'll explore how mockery WAS used (both abusively-by man, & redemptively-by God), how it IS used, WHY it's used and WHEN mockery may indeed be acceptable. The Sovereign LORD has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious, I have not turned away. I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me? Let us face each other! Who is my accuser?
