There Once Was a Bar in Spain with poet and writer Magdalene Smith

When I first asked Magdalene to join me under the gazebo in the courtyard of The Mabel Dodge Luhan House, I thought we were going to talk about writing. Imagine my surprise when she shifted from the notion of blank pages to a compelling story about how she first went to Europe in her early twenties, she traveled with her new husband, a few dollars in her pocket, and a child on the way. I was even more surprised to learn she and her husband ended up owning a famous bar in Spain much like Rick's Bar in the classic film Casablanca.
