There’s a SARS tax system that many small-business owners may not know about Turnover Tax?

From 1 April 2026, qualifying micro businesses with annual turnover of up to R2.3 million can opt into the system. The first R600,000 of turnover is taxed at 0%, meaning a qualifying business can make up to R600,000 in turnover without paying Turnover Tax on that amount. And it works differently from normal income tax: instead of taxing your profit, Turnover Tax is calculated on your turnover essentially the money your business receives from its business activities. So, for example, a business with taxable turnover of R900,000 would pay R3,000 in Turnover Tax not R3,000 every month, but R3,000 for the year. The system is optional, and you have to apply to SARS if you qualify. There are also specific eligibility requirements, so not every small business automatically qualifies. It’s essentially SARS saying: if you’re a qualifying small business, there’s a simpler tax system available but you need to know about it and choose to use it.
