"They (New Orleans leadership) burned their house down, and they're calling me (AG Murrill) the arsonist"

The New Orleans City Council voted to appoint an interim Orleans Parish Clerk of Court and call a special election after the state moved to eliminate the elected criminal clerk position held by Calvin Duncan. Duncan, who won the election last year after being exonerated from a wrongful murder conviction, has been at the center of a legal and political fight over whether the office can legally be abolished before his term is completed. City leaders argue voters’ voices should still be honored, while state leaders say consolidating the office would improve efficiency. The dispute is continuing in court as officials work to determine who will oversee the clerk’s duties moving forward.
