Things Marie Kondo Would Tell You... If She Could See Your Mess

from The Daily Grateful with Michael Crose · host Michael Crose

Look around – would Marie Kondo be proud, or would she faint? Here’s her guide to uncluttering, if you dared: start by dreaming your space clean, then confront your stash one category at a time. Keep only stuff that "sparks joy" (goodbye, junk mail, and gym gear). Fold clothes like a laundry ninja, give each trinket a home, and maybe – just maybe – show a little love to your stuff. Happy cleaning… or something.

I organized my laundry today. It is. It is so overdue that I've done. And I discovered mysterious things.

And then I thought of Marie Kondo. Remember her? Marie Kondo, the organization lady. We'll talk about that.

And welcome to the Daily Grateful. I am Michael Cross and I have 30 pairs of underwear. I had no idea. I have 30 pairs of underwear.

I have 30 pairs of underwear. Nice underwear too, by the way. I learned like five years ago. I'm old, but I learned five years ago the way to buy nice underwear.

What am I talking about? Anyway, I learned it and I've been buying nice underwear ever since. But I didn't think I bought so much underwear. You know, it's not cheap when you buy good underwear.

And. But because my laundry room was so disorganized for the last year, I kept, you know, running out of underwear and buying underwear, ordering on Amazon, ordering it on somewhere else and getting. I've got under. I.

My underwear drawer could not hold all the underwear I have. Although I'm going to use Marie Kondo method of rolling it all up and making it fit. But, you know, and in doing that, I'm in this big reorganization mode. I turned my studio into not only my studio, but also my office.

And I didn't think I could do that, but I took a long table and put it against the wall way over there. And I put my computer and my keyboard and my printer and all that stuff on there. And I still have a lot of space. And that's good.

I gotta bring a few more things in and do that. Move this table way back. And then this morning I decided, okay, I'm gonna tackle the laundry room. Folded everything, hung up everything, huddled everything to my closet, hauled everything to my dresser, hauled everything to where I put everything else.

And it is all organized. And I'm so happy. And I sat there and I said, what would Marie Kondo said? So I kind of looked it up and we'll talk about that a little bit today, because being organized makes you feel better.

By the way, you ever buy stuff on the TikTok Shop? I bought, I bought. That's a whole podcast in itself because I bought some, you know, interesting stuff and I bought some real dog stuff. And the stuff that came today, I'm not sure if it's real good stuff or real dog stuff.

It's called pure Himalayan Shajit Gold gummies. I don't know, haven't tried them yet. That's for tomorrow. But anyway, Marie would say, visualize your ideal lifestyle starting early by imaging how you want your space to look and feel.

Because if your space feels organized, you feel organized. Tidy by category, not room. Yeah, I need to do that. And that's what I did today.

I started with laundry. Getting that tidy and organizing keep what sparks joy my. The way I'm a big one for throwing crap out. I throw crap out all the time.

As a matter of fact, I have a rule. Do not bring things into the house unless you're replacing something. Take things out of the house. And that.

I adopted that about, I don't know, five, six years ago. Just get crap out of the house. That's what I need to do, is get crap out of the house. So by doing all of that, it makes me better getting that.

My office out of my bedroom. You see, I used to have an office in the next bedroom, but my son and his girlfriend moved in with me. So I took that out of there and compressed it into my bedroom because I didn't want to mess with my studio. And I really didn't like having it in my bedroom because I like my bedroom to be where I sleep.

That's why I like my bedroom to be where I sleep. I used to have television. I got rid of the television. But you know what I'm gonna do?

I put another television in there. My favorite ex wife, Diane, is giving me a television. I'm put that in there. And you want to know why I'm doing that?

Because when I moved into this house, I had a television in there. I never watched it much, but I remember after the presidential election, when Barack Obama was elected, I was laying in my bed and I turned on the TV and I watched that, and it was a total change for America. We never had a black president before. He was an interesting family man, and, you know, let's not talk politics.

But it was just. It was historical, and I thought it was interesting. And now, coming up, chances are reasonably good that we're going to have a black female president. And I think I just want to lay on my bed and watch that happen or not.

But I. So I'm going to take the TV from Diane and. And just do that, you know, just so I can experience that again. Because I experienced it when, you know, in 2009 when Obama was.

So now all these years later, I would experience it again. Just sort of fun things. Okay. Anyway, Marie suggests working through categories in a specific order, starting with clothes.

That's where I'm starting then. Books don't have, you know, I have books, but my books are pretty well organized. I have a bookshelf, and most of the books are in the bookshelf and a few won't fit in there. So I have another bookshelf that I need to do that.

But I need to decide where I want to have a bookshelf at. Currently it's in my living room and I think I'm going to keep it there, but where it is, I'm going to have to move it to add the next one next to it because I, you know, I like having books that I can go and refer to and just grab. Use a folding method for the clothes and re. Encourages folding items so that they stand upright in a drawer.

I need to do that with my underwear. Damn, I got a lot of underwear. And the guy that inspired me to get underwear just got married yesterday. And I was going to call him today and say, I got all this underwear I'm going to organize.

But I decided, no, I won't bother him today, but soon, but. And designate a place for everything. And I think that's important. Organization is fun.

I'm grateful for it. It's hard work sometimes. And sometimes if you just let it go, which I did, I am guilty of letting it go. I'm so guilty of ignoring and hoping it would go away, but I know damn good well it wasn't going to.

And then when I dive into it, I think I went to my daughter's house yesterday to watch the kids while she went to a movie. She went on a date to a movie. And I saw all the ways she had made changes to her house, which she constantly is evolving. Her house.

Constantly. Constantly. I was so impressed with that. That really inspired me to come back here and do the same thing with my 30.

I'm counting so much. We'll see you tomorrow.
