"This is my adoption story. Let me know what you think " ~ Betty Mooney. 1936- 2022

from Skin Deep · host Corinna Tolan

In March 1936, my grandparents gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Ireland, at that time, was a very different place to the Ireland we know today, and despite being in love and wanting to marry, they weren't allowed to keep their baby girl. Giving her up for adoption, my grandparents had one request, that she be named Elizabeth after my Grandfather's adored sister, who had succumbed to TB.  In 1980, Betty (Elizabeth) made the brave decision to reach out to her birth mum, and so began a beautiful story of love, loss and many years of laughter.  One day, Betty asked me to document her story. Less than four weeks after we did, Betty went to her eternal place of rest. I honestly believe that on that day in the podcast studio, she knew she was simply leaving her affairs in order and preparing for her final journey. It was a privilege to have played a role in this. Rest in Peace, Dear Elizabeth. "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you."  ~ Maya Angelou
