This is the best hang podcast featuring Max Gurman Shane Cunningham and I and Mike Bierman Welcome to the best hang a podcast. I'm like we got Max. We got Shane here all together in Toronto Ontario You know guys the podcast when we're in person. It just has a better a better vibe This is the problem about like art these days is that it's so easy not to do it in person.
Oh that segue was okay So wait, let me wrap my head around so you know what they're making art is that because nobody wants to go to the office anymore Is that it just like oh let's just zoom it or it's like when the band it's like oh why don't we just extend files to each other Or you know it's like everything is better in real life. Do you get it so annoying to like job around you consider podcasting to be an art I think so. We're creating are we creating? I don't even know it's just there's something about energy and ideas in a room That just feels different than energy and ideas that being said two of us live in Hamilton And I don't think you come to us to up and we're often making a trip to you Matt.
No never No, I mean I was just so great that you happen have these jobs in Toronto where we can do this I was more of an observation like a big picture observation Just how you know in person stuff is just so much more fun. It's true It really is and also we work down to we work here Shane So it does make more sense on a day that we're in the office for you and actually come behind us to roll out this very very Quality entertainment that we give a little stuff part of my art is doing little quips. They don't actually have to be true They're just meant to be funny. It's true, but don't you find that they're better when we're in person?
Yeah, timing the timing's where your comedic force time. I was just joking with Max there I wasn't actually meaning that Max is like a lazy unartistic ass or something I'm not even sarcastic there like you know wrong Great start guys. So lots is happening. You know max you're like still signing books Sign a lot of different Yeah, that's around the country max curvy.com.
You'll find it. I was at an indigo with my kids last week And I saw the photo of you and it was like Max Kerman signing whatever dare it was Yeah, no the book size have been amazing the crowds have been great people are so friendly We have very normal nice fans people know kind of exactly like how long to linger what questions to ask I always ask what they do for work There's like teachers nurses people work for the city like just like a lot of just like kind thoughtful readers So it's great. Do you ever find yourself thinking like a kind of one or something a little bit longer? There's a line up you know that's on my back.
Yeah, sometimes. Yeah, there's the odd one who says something I'll catch my guard on one of this versus about I'll sometimes they don't share something that's like been sad in their life and that's interesting. I am you require your eyes I listen sometimes I get a little a little teary eyed There's a woman in Calgary who's been through a lot and she gave me an update with what you know with me around her family And it was very moving you know It's amazing house even like in a big library in Calgary. Oh, you just like two of you in a room and she's telling something heartbreaking Yeah, it's good.
It's good. It's an interesting thing when somebody shares something, you know, that's been going through You know someone maybe you don't know very well, you know, sometimes we do ends and stuff on Instagram or whatever And so I think it's this really sort of beautiful thing That's the part of human connection We want to share you know all this but it is always difficult to know really what to say back or how to respond You know, like that is an art in its own way, you know, or because I think you have the empathy Maybe you don't even know how to express it that doesn't feel flippant or short too short depending on what they're sort of telling you Two ideas that I think saying thank you for sharing Thank you so much for sharing because I always think that's like a brave thing when somebody shares Yeah, and then and also sometimes I like push and ask more and it feels funny to it Because it feels invasive to like ask another like a follow-up question But sometimes when you just like ask like the most direct question you have about what they just shared Yeah, it's actually the best thing you can do because it doesn't feel like they didn't dismiss or go Feel stupid like you're actually like invested in what they just told you I think that's good the floodgates can open though Uh-huh and you can do that and then next thing you know, you're having lunch with this person Oh, and you know, I've been I've been caught up in those things and I enjoy them You put them on your will for some reason who knows like, you know, my limits are kind of endless into what I'm willing to do But there comes a point where you're like, okay, maybe I should put up some barriers just to protect my own bandwidth So you go family. Yeah, yeah, cuz it is tricky because I'm such a you know, if I give someone an angel give them a mile Uh-huh that's a good quality overall, but I guess you have to put it in your family. Yes Because sometimes like, you know, I'll go upstairs and I'll be gone for two hours and I'll be like where did you go?
I had to talk to this person. How do you know them? I'm like, they're a pod fan That's so weird. Uh-huh, so yeah, I don't know how to end a conversation like you like you'll ask another question and then you'll probably like that's great All right, I think it yeah, it's it's you know, we were talking about actually I want to get to this But how you deliver lines?
Yeah, you land on the thank you. You know, thanks That's okay. No, thank you. Thank you.
Yes, that is harder because struggle is vocal donation I think if you can speak not even the words you say but how you say the words exactly you can say that properly. Uh-huh. It's like a gift Yeah, I'm like, thanks you. Yeah, exactly Yeah, it can be good for unintentional comedy sometimes There's like a little bit of awkward phrasing that has served me well But in terms of like landing correctly and went to end the sentence.
I often don't do that properly. Yeah There's I was a Michael Lewis on deck shippers podcast and as we know Michael Lewis is my favorite writer He's the most charming talker. You guys all know he sounds like he's been a podcast I found when you were doing your performance. You kind of had a certain cadence that was there Michael Lewis Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah And he we did have Michael Lewis on the pot.
I remember that right? Yes. Yeah, it's not crazy. That's right.
That was the big joke That was so funny. Yeah, I will say it is kind of it You know, it's a fascinating thing that between this and then the pod when it was, you know, formerly Mike I'm much we had like I don't know how many people we've interviewed like well over a hundred or something like that and sometimes We'll remind me that like I forget who we've talked to see someone like on screen in a big movie We know like an actor and you're like I'm talking about that person. Yeah, yeah Well forget right now. It's like yeah, he just hosted us and I was like oh we had many moments together Yeah, I mean like such like a not unfamous person But he gave off such a an error of you could ask him anything and even go out for like a drink with them afterwards Yeah, totally and like big big name like we sat around with now we forgot about that just I forgot about that Just don't remind him.
Huh, and that's not you know again But I'm just saying we bring up Michael Lewis and I was like wait a second like was he and it's like you could be like Oh, no, no, no, you misremember that we ran into him somewhere. Okay, and it's like oh no wait We actually sat talking about just crazy balls money balls anyway Michael Lewis you're watching him on So he was on Daxhopper's pot and he mentioned that one of the characters in the big short played by Christian Bale was a very like odd unusual person and Christian Bale spent a day with the guy to just do like research on the character and Michael was like he did this incredible job like he nailed it better than I could imagine because I was not this character would be very hard to like act and What Christian Bale said was that he owe this this particular person always breathed in the wrong part of a sentence So and so Christian like once you knew that you always breathe you know, you know your little gasp You like that's all you need to know with that guy. Yes, and then that's just tick I notice like Tarantino kind of does that he takes these odd breaths. Yeah, I'm saying yes Yeah, and it's very unusual you guys are gonna go out to go solo right now for a second Take a quick call sorry guys But I do want to tell the listeners and I'll tell them about this Mike later off air So I emailed Michael Lewis after like yesterday Wow because if you recall from the Harvard Collegiate book launch event I had this big reveal, you know with the quote of course very funny execution.
I like that so far listeners weren't there I'm telling all these stories But where I follow my face and how things have not worked out and I tell the story about Michael Luke emailing Michael Lewis asking him for a blurb And he says he doesn't blurb because if he did you know time blurbin all day Blurbin all day, but then he said it in a way that I like left the door open a little bit in my mind even though It's never open so that I respond again And he's like max I cannot blurb and then yeah the first one's completely telling you know Yeah, and second I can't but like you know if you want me to help with a live event I can do that and then we took the quote and put it on big billboard and I or like a what you call that thing Easily I'll display and so that's because I emailed him back and I said can I use this as a blurb and then of course I got a big laugh in the room. I'm telling the story very badly, but yeah, yeah But anyway, I sent him a photo of the easel He said I hope this is what I'm remembered for I'm gonna save it and just ended up whenever anyone else asked for one In any way sending Matt that he could be like what the fuck man like I feel like he's such a good sense of humor that he like Get it immediately I did think of that for a split second, but I was like now he's fine back to Tarantino though for a second I've been think because I read somewhere that Tarantino when he writes his movies he writes about in chapters or something like He's a big legal pad. Huh? He kind of writes it out like a book almost or something.
Have you heard this? He definitely did that with once upon a time in Hollywood, and he actually turned it into a book Yeah, oh yeah, yeah novel. Yeah, and it's completely different than the movie. Oh Interesting anyway, okay, okay Okay, now I guess every scene I'm like Bt like years ago doing doing like this like weird like entertainment television Yeah, no, I have no idea He's talking to a bunch of black people He starts talking with a very obvious like affectation like trying to mind them and Very have you never seen this it is no, we will be looking at him like Tarantino's crazy He's like floated in and out of that over there because he writes like you know pulp fiction He's writing the San Jackson character Right, and so I think there's something about him that feels like he can as a writer that's writing multiple characters Maybe he feels like he can embody all of these things to in order to write in their voice and then it manifests on stage like that Which in the year 2025 when you're watching you're going like oh, yeah, that's you can't do that But what was the reception then though was people were like in the room was fine But like of course I think this maybe like 15 years ago people are watching back on this is not good Okay, my question though but Tarantino what makes Tarantino special other than he's just a force of nature like is this storytelling that good like All of it that he's like you know what it comes like originals like scenes or the way he frames things Like is it just everything but the dialogue lives up to how he shoots at the editing is unbelievable like I think he's the full package And I think so many people aspire to be that but it's just so hard to get mind to page to screen Yeah, it's just so hard and he's like a casting genius to Oh, like confident but he's also neurotic It's got this he's like he's one of one and he knows how to use actors in a way like you'll see Michael Madsen You'll be like this guy's one of the best actors going then you'll see him in like a shit B movie You're like he's objectively terrible so he knows how to use the tools he's given huh like he's the best like it's so hard And the fact that he's a writer and a director just makes him something special to an actor He's almost an editor to yeah, yeah, he's just he has a total command of storytelling in that form because when his editor died He I think her name is Sally Menke or something She got she went on a hike and she got heat exhaustion and died whoa and I was wondering okay How much is this one to change his movies going forward and then a glorious bastards came out and I was like wow He still got it.
It doesn't even really matter the editor is your favorite director It's like saying is timberlake your favorite member of NSAC. It's almost so obvious Oh, it's a very good thing you want to say who your second favorite is but like yeah PTA Tarantino Nolan not Nolan I know I know he knows more consistent PTA like I take I take Tarantino first in the draft Yes, maybe CTA's highs in your opinion or higher Yeah, but like boogie nights was his Pulp fiction You know then you got there will be blood which was his and glorious bastard So like there is a competition there and Tarantino openly admits he's in competition with PTA But you're right Tarantino does not miss and inherent vice has to be considered a bit of a mess. Yeah, and what was I consider that a mess. Yeah, and like also turns you know somehow he does oh tour movies that are also extremely popular Uh-huh like that's a really hard thing like Steven Spielberg does obviously big populist movies But people he actually does thread a fine line where it's like popcorn movie And he does like the really sort of artistic stuff But I think that's like once upon a time Hollywood Has massive stars in it.
Mm-hmm. Glory's bastards. I guess yeah Leo is in the always a big star Well, Gloria's bastards Brad Pitt. It's pretty big only was nine glories He turned down the role of the Hans Lauda.
Yeah, the with Christoph Waltz role then he's in Django. Mm-hmm. Yeah, but anyway I just I think turn to the best I think he's gotta be I think yeah if you look at the filmography and his movies are so fucking watch it Like if they come on I'm sitting now I'm sitting I'm watching wow. He just was consistency so important It's like sports, you know You can have a 40-point game, but are you getting 40 points every game and I feel like Tarantino's coming out every movie getting 40 points Uh-huh and so where is this in glorious bastards opens with the sort of famous scene where the tension because you know the Jewish people being hidden under the floorboards and he comes in as like a Nazi commander and he's talking to the person that's hiding them And you don't know if he knows that they're under there, but he's playing in this sort of way It's a very famous opening scene I think Tarantino says he likes to write his movies He starts with a scene that he knows is like mmm amazing Yeah, this is gonna be the hook whatever for the rest of the movie But I was on Twitter the other day and they showed the scene and from remembers this from Gloria's bastards where so I think the one that got away like so he ends up shooting the floorboards up and one of the girls gets away and They ends up opening a movie theater and I don't want to give away the movie, but anyway She ends up sitting down in this nice restaurant.
Maybe in France I can't remember where the Christoph Waltz character is sitting across from her at this dinner table And what he wants to do is he wants to use her film house for a bunch of the Nazis to come in which she wants She's a cheaper plan is to lock them in and flame it You know and but she's got to sort of just present his this theater That owner, but she's also terrified of this guy that murdered her family You know and that scene I think is actually more intense than maybe the opening scene in that like what she's thinking what he's thinking He is he aware like he orders that scene is intense or more intense because of the opening scene without the opening scene You don't know the true terror that could be like waiting for her Totally right and it's like the way she's acting it I totally forgot about this scene and then they order this like these like pastries at this nice restaurant He's like no no no like he doesn't let her eat he doesn't eat smoke. He's like we need the cream bring the cream So I'm the guy in the conversation stops, right? And I think the whole conversation is actually in French maybe but and she's like just you know Yeah, you come to the theater and all this stuff and and then when he gets up He's okay like let's do it or whatever he books the theater and he walks away and she has like that Like that moment where it's like holy fuck. Yeah, this was crazy.
I just like fuck this movie I can tell me you don't want to eat whatever the fuck that is too So he also shoots food and things in a way that just makes you want them like in Paul fiction when they're talking about the burger I'm like I want a burger now just a way that looks like a tasty burger like you know Well, so speaking of of Tarantino and actors and great actors in the last episode Shane was preparing for an audition Shane the listeners want to know what was the outcome? I was surprised how many people actually wanted to know because I'm like okay, so obvious. It's like a foregone conclusion I'm going to do poorly But it was an awesome experience and turn not necessarily for good reasons But I do like I do like truly unique experiences and often and I think because I was telling Mike about it too So this sort of might be a bit wasted on Mike But you're here I'm excited for you to tell it on the pot and Max is fresh here But there's a scene in what's the movie with Emma Stone La La Land where I think who's auditioning is it? It's her it's her auditioning and there's these very disinterested people auditioning and it almost felt like just caricatures like oh This is how you'd imagine an LA audition.
Yeah, so disinterested that it's felt false But I'm telling you people like this do exist Wow, so I need up with Jules the cast of the director who not that I was doing a favor for her But she didn't need someone in like quickly She needed a lot of actors because I think the actors who were being shown weren't up to snout from another so I show up and have a Great interaction with Jules. We you know we chop it up for a bit and she's like whenever you're ready Tell me I'll march in there. I go with confidence. I'm ready now She gives me my sides.
They're called which are just the lines and I walk in and she goes alright Here is Shane the people do not look up at me at all to man a woman the man who did I say look like because Mr. Fainter not Can always but somebody oh he had a very specific look that now I've forgotten but just head down and he's talking to the woman And so Jules and director goes again. This is Shane He's he's here for the audition and they go yeah talk amongst each other do not look up at me They're talking about previous I did LA producers. Yes people are from LA to Jules just goes okay I'm gonna go up.
They don't put their head up. They don't look at Jules anything. I'm just standing there now I'm like freaked out of my fucking mind. I'm like holy shit.
This is the big leagues like these people together attention I'm actually going to have to do something incredible because they're not just going I'm not gonna have their own divided attention then this nervous intern walks up to me and she goes okay I'm gonna be telling you your lines like are you gonna be like my partner? She's like I'll be over there. I'm like okay. So I got no partner now I'm a really bad like my my mom like when I don't have a prop and it's like pretend you're holding your bag and like the Persons like you're talking your wife beside you, but there's no person there my eyeliner fucked up So they just go then they put their heads up in unison.
They go okay. You ready? Oh, yeah And they go and I was expecting like you know when we do casting like we go here's the scene here's what we want you to do So on paper I'm supposed to be pulling groceries out of a car and bringing them to like an island counter in a kitchen and yelling up to kids But the grocery bag that they have there is just on this stool So I'm like what the fuck do I do with the bag? So he goes go and I pick up the bag and I start walking with it Like I'm taking it out of a car and then I kind of plop it down I'm like kids or whatever my line is and he goes that was very natural, but he goes you just keep the bag down He goes don't walk around just keep the bag down.
You're beside your wife I'm like that's not what's on the fucking size. That's not what it says. So then I go again You think that no, but I'm like that's so unfair I'm gonna give me that direction because I'm of course going to do what's in the script so then Go I go kids the groceries are down here I get some help or whatever and I'm looking at the wife who's supposed to be there But the intern is over there But I'm looking at where the wife would be and he's like hey play to the camera play to the camera the cameras over there So when the wife's talking when I'm putting down the groceries I'm supposed to look to my left even though the wife is supposed to be to the right and the intern saying that my lines is down the center This is human instincts always want to look at who's talking to right like if you're yelling off camera My head wants to look but I think I'm being smart and very accurate by talking to the invisible person Yeah, but then they want me to play it to the camera So then it comes out so silt it at that point and then they're just done with me I can see it but since I have like a little bit of facial hair There's a cowboy role and she's like she's like cowboy maybe cowboy and like they're mumbling to each other But I can hear them and the guy the guy can tell him kind of listening He's just like like you just kind of shakes his head off cowboy because just I think cuz my acting chops And then they're like okay, you now you're a boom guy. You're a boom guy pick up that broom there You're the boom guy and the interns gonna give you the lines sure so the intern comes up to me She goes okay, so this line you're like talking to yourself.
I go okay So I pick up the boom and I hold it like this right because hold it like a boom. I go. I never held a boom Okay, I have strike one. I don't know how to hold a boom So it's like this guy's not believable and I probably look too much like cowboy to be a boom person I'm holding it behind my head and then he goes action and I go they got buns there and I'm talking to myself He's like I can't hear you.
What are you doing? No, but you're like interrupting a scene here You're a boom guy and you like these buns so you're interrupting the scene You're like did somebody say buns and then I say the line I'm like if somebody say buns and I look over again They're not looking at me and they've already moved on in their minds to the next person And I say bye and I leave they do not even know if I'm leaving putting my heads up I'm taking the softest steps ever just exiting and then I thank God Jules wasn't there to witness that She kind of vouched for me and said like this guy started a sketch show and all this stuff like I'm a bigger actor than I actually am oh my god and then I just called you Mike and Amazing amazing experience. Yes, it was truly out of a movie and now when I see scenes like that I'm like that's pretty accurate. Yeah, I have that experience.
Uh-huh and the other one no something must have lost my number No, no callback that is shocking I guess these people are doing that all day. They just like don't care anymore And I just think you need a scene partner Uh-huh and I bet you at the beginning of the day and this happens to us to sometimes at the end of the day You're just running through the motions a little bit But I think you need to give the actors direction and give them a scene partner because some people aren't going to be mining And if it's not a mining role that requires you to you know interact with things that don't exist don't have the mime It totally another thing happens to it casting like when we do stuff when we did a desert we had a cast like I don't know 100 rolls there's some crazy on rolls, but that's that's the that's one that gets the rules right? Then there's like potentially 15 or 24 a single role So what happens is and I'm actually in commercial right now that I'm directing and you go through these maybe you do this too But so like you start watching say you have like 35 people right so you start watching you start making like a consensus Like top three let's say right so like say the fourth person is like okay Yeah, I'll put them in the top three then like the six person shit They're pretty good and you kind of start jumping stuff around once you kind of have if you have like a solid Like top three by the time you get to like the 18 person everyone after 18 They have to really blow you away to get into your consensus like down through There's something very human about like oh, I like that person I saw closer to the front and then you have to step away And then you have to come back and then actually compare them again I go is that I just have like did I stick with the person I like originally or is this one that like audition number 33 Actually better than what I have number two and that's if you're willing to to toil over it Yes, these people aren't such a bind that they're just like go go give it There was like I think 32 rolls for this particular commercial and this is also not in person I'm talking about when we get the links to like self tapes. This is for commercial.
Yes How long is this commercial 32 rolls? Oh big ass this commercials huge like one of these big budget like fancy commercials Uh-huh so they were taking it like way too seriously in my opinion. Wow. Wow onto the next as they say well Then the next day I got another audition opportunity.
So I'm like, okay. I fucked that one up. I'm competitive Now I'm like I'm going hard on this audition. It's a self-tape.
Oh, so I Practice the hell out of it, but the problem was it required a New York accent It had the word like ain't in it a lot and I tried to say ain't without an accent But it was it didn't say do a New Jersey accent, but it's like begging for it in the lines. Can you differ us? Oh? I actually I did it pretty good I don't have it good now But it was like it was for some show but like I'm a I'm an annoying guy at a bar And I'm like hitting on this vampire woman, okay, and I think she like strangles me with her mind Okay, I had to do like some choke at like being air now.
That's an ultimate mine. Yeah, but at the beginning I'm like I'm like hey, oh wait, I don't think I can't say the lines. I had though there was a thing with like do Okay, don't get yourself into trouble. Yeah, but maybe just give us a sentence in a New York accent Yeah, just just say like I'm going down the block to get a slice of pizza It's hard because the lines are so specific Channel the character and repeat after me.
Oh the words they made me say we're so perfect though. I can't do it One of my oldest oldest best friends who's actually no longer with us guy named Lee Penrose He's doing his bit in like grade five. He's like a little kid grade five six and you did through middle school Where you're like only like you want to hang out after school or whatever and he goes I gotta get up in the morning and go to wake Doing that we use the laughs so fucking hard at this grade five six kids Shine would make me do that all in the high school. We run into each other the bars.
Yes, we do it Do your New York big but Lee was hilarious is that when it's character and Lee's like all world hilarious amazing improv comedy person But I had to play this kind of realistic this guy's kind of desperate He's kind of drunk and he's kind of sad of pathetic and he's forgetting if he asks this woman question or not And then by the end of it you kind of feel bad for the guy so I worked really hard on it Like you when it would you and Alex like run it we ran it and then I did it I was doing the audition in front of her But I kept getting so humiliated that I just what I am We were laughing a lot too because it is so humiliating and then I went up to our bedroom and just did it alone And I found that to be the best take and that's a beauty of self tape to you and kind of you know You know you're yourself and then I submitted and I felt like okay, but I you know I did not hear back how long goes that? We could go there's no time I was right now saying I'm in the middle of the book direct to commercial at the start of June and we do these things called animatics Which are like basically you take the storyboards Soundbed you basically plotted the commercial with the sort of the the hand-drawn Storyboards to see for timing performance sort of vibe or whatever, but this one has a couple and they're they're like doing yoga or whatever I think I can say this it doesn't access and so I always do the voice of the man like whenever I do the voiceover And I can do that stuff But I needed like the wife that's in the spot and so I just need to record it like you know H6 and then I laid into my audio bed, but so like I have to go up and bug Danica where I'm like and she hates it She's like I hate the way I sound I was gonna live the voice She doesn't like come down come do whatever and honestly I could play just like so like you know if the line is like I can't say the line to say you're saying you can't say the line because it's a pretty big client But let's say the line is like I love yoga. That's not the line. Let's say it is okay I need you to be like like I love yoga.
She's like okay. I love yoga. I'm like no you put the emphasis Okay, okay, and I'm like directing her then she'll say it like one way that is so holy like I love yoga And we're just dying laughing yeah And like so the recording into the zoom actually of like me directing her her saying lines in different funny ways And then I was just like laughing in between and it kind of being a fun couple thing to do yes Yeah, I was you know when you were mentioning doing the lines without that's kind of like a fun thing for a couple to do that Yes, I don't want to kill each other that it's like you guys have this like you know creative act together Yes, I think a lot of couples like don't get that and nothing needed but it's kind of cool It's very like beginning of a movie where a wife is killed by a drunk driver moment because We have laughed so hard filming these weird ads that we have to do Because um what do they like we work for a wallet company A little ridge and we have to shoot so many commercials and one I had to like propose to her and do all this stuff They also sell rings but we have just hours of us laughing on camera Yeah, and it's like we would never get this otherwise and these are moments that we can save and watch later And it almost feels fake because how wholesome the laughs are and sometimes we're like laughing sword We're crying and it is it's oddly fun. It's like a super annoying to shoot these ads to at the same time.
Oh you dread it It's like a tension creates a lot of percent. Yeah, yeah, I actually had an interesting moment so the other day I was I'm a tree. I just want to show it. No, it's not it's not something thing But I was at we was Mother's Day recently And you so what I did was so you know the kids want to make cards for their mom or whatever So I was thinking what could be a fun like way to do I was like oh it's just gonna do we're gonna go to go to the dollar store We're gonna like a giant piece of her store.
They pay whatever color they want for their mom and then we'll like fold it into basically oversized Mother's Day cards and then I got a bunch of glitter and stickers and whatever the fuck they want Like literally whatever you want and this is kind of a hack if you have kids like the dollar store to them They're walking out with like bags of shit, but it cost you like 14 dollars. Yeah, I love the dollars It's amazing amazing. So we get these we're gonna make these cards wherever but you're walking on They have these balls or whatever so Roberta my youngest She's got this like ball that she's like obsessed with and she's like bouncing and chasing around the store and I'm like okay, like let's go buy this stuff We came to buy and we're like can I have the ball like can I get the ball and like no and we just gone And stuff like she got in a ball like the week before and using and I feel like Danica's like you always because I do I'm kind of like I'm gonna fuck it's a buck like this is great Yeah, but you got a set a precedent of like you can't always have everything you want every story going to and I've been guilty I've kind of just been like yeah go for it And then I look like you know great dad or whatever and all that all comes from a place of like well to them to the kids You know, you know Danica says no it makes her look, you know Yeah, so we got to get that and my it comes it comes from a place where I never got anything you got you know one pair of shoes a year She's like that's I was like I wanted to do more but anyway long story long I'm putting my foot down and I tell Roberta. No, so she starts to have like a mini like Well, I get a ball and I'm like you can't and then when no one who's six layers except that she goes Roberta You can walk the ball all the way to the counter, but then you have to leave it and Roberta goes, okay I was actually pretty mature so I'm like you got me out of a tantrum.
Thank you and own amazing your props We're no 100% so we get to the fucking the counter and but here's the other thing that we're not Doesn't know she's gonna block me times I have very didn't stick to the fucking deal Then she was like and I get it now that we're at the counter whenever I was like no and the dollar store employee This like older woman. She's seen this whole thing goes down. I buy all the stuff and I'm like sorry I'm gonna give this to you like put back and she said can I buy it for her? Oh, come on.
I was like I was like oh my goodness I was like that is the nicest thing in the world like you know I don't know what a dollar store employee makes but it was the sweetest like thing for her to be like I want to buy your daughter that that ball and I had to like say I was like oh that is like honestly the kindest thing and honestly I'm so moved and and but I'm trying to like I'm trying to Like draw a line if I get her that that she's gonna think that she goes okay I get it I'm like but that is so nice and honestly you would have been here a total hero to her and she's like now I can't because you said no and I laugh and I was like thank you so much or whatever but I just I wanted a Or name I don't know that but I just was like I was really moved by this older woman I was just like I want to buy the kid the ball I thought you were gonna say she's like it's okay We've all been two tough times and then rings it through anyway Yeah, that's nice. Yeah, no she oh no no it ended with me holding the line Yeah, once I get my mind on something I got to stick to it cuz otherwise I feel like I'm failing myself. Yeah Yeah, that's great. So dollar store in Hamilton.
Shout out to that very very kindly I don't like that to it our dollar store on consent. It's not on the concession one. No, it wasn't. Yeah, there's this woman She like love it.
I don't know maybe they just hire they have a stritiring policy But it's the nicest woman in the world who knows my kids by name Oh my god, and they are there a lot but she would do that kind of shit to yeah, would you accept? No, because it is all about the president, especially dollar search not about the price Yes, but a good move I found is saying we'll get that on your birthday Yes, that's I don't know if that would work on your kids It works almost every time and Lucy who's even older. She's like, okay. Yeah, my birthday and then they forget 20 minutes later But Lucy's doesn't forget she'll actually get it like recently she just did that was something but it is a good delay tactic I do a big.
We'll revisit it. Oh, we'll revisit it. Like we'll we'll visit it Let's talk about it later and hopefully forget and 80% of the time they do and then sometimes they do remember Max's kid corner right now Or our parenting chat boring those shit I got my own version I got uncle corner. I'm about that forever.
So I get it man Yeah, but your point though about kids not having any sense about like prestige or like what's considered good Yeah, they have no clue. Do you know? I mean like they don't really care They just rather have a bunch of shiny stuff even if it costs nine dollars and they use it for a day I forget if you're like, oh, that's why I was thinking it's like now I'm really in trouble with probably like Family tree world so tell me from getting into over here But whenever I see people dressing up their children in really nice luxury brands I get it if that's the odd photo or something, but like just what I see as a kid way more stylish than me I'm just like there's so much money being spent on your all of your clothes It's crazy like when we were going out. We just wore sweatpants until like grade nine totally and no one gave it But because of this Instagram world and it's like everyone's like make their kid look hot or something like that He's like you know, like a boy.
I'm like fucking temple. It's like you just great. Yeah Yeah, and I get it that you want to like pride in your kids and you want your kids look cute and we're in this life Where we take lots of photos and stuff like that, but I was just like I just think like kids don't really know until you really hammer it Well, I think I find it's more about it's about the parents when you dress your kids really cool. Yeah, like I find your kids dress really Nice, yeah, and it cares.
Yeah, and then now they like now when no one really has thoughts and now birdie's And which is great cool like to have a sense of what they want when Dan shops for them like they have a say And that's not That's all the way these are not expensive clothes like these are like, you know, like Joe fresh stuff or stuff it like in different places None of this is an advertisement for Joe fresh, but Reberta Roberta had these air maxes that my brother like Greg Uncle Greg and Auntie Laura gone Roberta for I don't know Maybe this Christmas or something, but she's wearing these air maxes for the last couple months But she would get compliments like we go to school the bus stop or whatever for school in the morning and all the parents Oh, I like your shoes or whatever and it's funny because Danica like Danica had a good observation where she's like whenever kids got like The air maxes like a three-year-old is air maxes. It's always the aunt or uncle because they don't mind spending the money because they don't realize that those shoes are obsolete in three months I literally this I literally this for my nephew. Yeah, he's nice. He's like he's nice.
I got him like a hundred thirty dollar pair Yeah, three months out of it like I'm so quick. He goes against you know I feel like you know, I'm gonna get shit like whatever you want. I know it's easier thing to do when I dress my kids They always look like Jim Carrey and It is a turnt when he's in the psychiatric or like it's always like a two-two messy hair share and always humiliated Oh, I don't care that much about like kid fashion even adult fashion. I don't care that much But are you good at like brushing your kids hair?
No, because you have long hair So I was like oh, maybe you know how to do like do ups or something I can do like I can put their hair up and all that stuff But I don't like brushing them or Danica brush them like my main thing is like brush your teeth Yeah, wipe your face So you don't like I don't look like I'm neglecting you and then they pick out I mean I pick over birds But when on picks our own outfit sit point. Okay, but yeah, so that's that's that's how that gets and also you know We were talking about Mother's Day and and all these things and we haven't said happy belay birthday Oh, yeah, we start they actually quite often shares a birthday with Mother's Day I got apologize chin because I sent you a text and then as soon as I said the text said you could have sent something way more thoughtful Max Happy birthday, Shanny boy You came around it's not that you said but just saying anything is important You're a busy guy so the fact that you even reached out and remembered to fall back up means a lot How was your birthday anything up note? Yes, oh, I'm not gonna say anything about this movie at all. I'm not even gonna give a facial expression But I did see the movie friendship.
Yes, which was very special because it was like a sneak screening and I didn't know It was such a special screening I thought it was like open to like the public and open in theaters everywhere But John Popless took me there and showed up two hours before so we could be first in line to get the perfect seat What I showed up the spot was Shane he held the spot and I didn't know so he's in alone as I'm like watching reality TV at home I'm almost like having a nap. I guess I'll go he's like I've been here for two hours And then I showed up it was pandemonium like just hipsters waiting for maybe they can get an opportunity Robinson with all right They had stand by tickets and this was like the hottest ticket town And I think only like four cities in Canada had to sneak premium elbow and I got to see the movie So that was probably the coolest gift ever ever because it's like you can't buy that You know gifts like that are very hard to do it's experience and it had to line up with the down idea birthday Yeah, like it was all came together. So that is a very rare thing So that I thought was a special gift and then Alex took me to like a spa like called milk Croft in which is a nice spot I just like kind of sitting in a pool and doing nothing so that was good for me. That's great Okay, we need to that's our homework is to watch friendship.
So we don't I'm not good today I love it. It comes out on the 24th. Oh, that's that's plain today Also, the Jesse Armstrong movie comes out later this month here. I know it's out.

We call them a 24 which ended some research Yes, you know the origin of why this is the why we celebrate this man. Well, it seems like it's more complicated You probably do know it's just because Queen Victoria's birthday. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah So it is on the 24th.
Yes, that's what it is and then they have to have the long weekend because to me it feels early It feels like it should be next weekend next week on the Saturdays 24th, but you're not it has to be the penultimate Monday Oh, that's how they determine it. What's penultimate mean? I mean before the last yeah before the finale is the penultimate episode Very cool I wrote it so far. Listen to Canada enjoy that all weekend amazing for they can Nathan Nash They could manage your ash.
