This One Test can Predict Your Political Views

from The Lucas Bean Show · host Lucas Bean

I keep hearing conservatives say the same thing:“I like their policies. It’s just common sense. I’ve always been a conservative.”But here’s what the science actually shows: Your brain function predicts who you vote for.And no, this isn’t some liberal bias talking. This is peer-reviewed neuroscience published in respected journals. Multiple independent studies. Thousands of participants. The kind of research that gets replicated because the findings are so consistent.Let me break down what researchers discovered, and why it changes everything we think we know about political beliefs. The Studies That Changed EverythingFor years, we assumed political beliefs were purely learned. Kids copied what their parents believed. If mom and dad were conservative, the kids became conservative. If they were liberal, the kids followed suit.Simple, right? Not quite.Researchers at UC San Diego, Ohio State, and Iowa State ran three separate peer-reviewed studies where they scanned the brains of hundreds of people to see if they could determine political affiliation based on brain activity alone. The results? Insane.Brain activity alone predicted political affiliation 83% of the time.Let me say that again: 83% of the time. That’s not a coin flip. That’s not random. That’s your brain structure literally predicting how you’ll vote before you even consciously choose. What They FoundPeople on the left showed significantly more activity in the part of the brain that controls:* Emotional intelligence* Self-awareness* EmpathyBasically, your ability to see the world from someone else’s perspective. Your ability to think critically about complex problems. Your awareness of your own behavior and how it affects others.People who were conservative showed more activity in the amygdala—the fear center of your brain. The amygdala processes things like anxiety, rage, and fear. It’s the part of your brain designed to keep you alive when threats are real and immediate. When it’s overactive? Everything starts to look like a threat. This Isn’t About Being “Born That Way”Here’s what I need you to understand: This isn’t a fixed outcome.People aren’t born with no critical thinking, no empathy, and no self-awareness.But here’s what happens:If you grow up in a toxic household ruled by fear, scapegoating, and hate—you’re going to start thinking the world is a dangerous place. That people are out to get you. That trust is weakness. You become what you’re exposed to constantly.Your brain adapts. It rewires. The amygdala gets trained to stay on high alert because that’s what kept you safe as a kid. Those people start to see—and create—that same chaos everywhere they go. Because that was their normal. So they project their chaos onto everything else.It seems selfish. And to most of the world, it is selfish. But that’s how they were trained to survive. It feels normal to them. The Part Nobody Wants to Talk AboutNow, this isn’t an excuse for them. They are adults. They can choose to not be this way.You get to choose. But—and this is critical—don’t forget: they struggle with self-awareness.That part of the brain is less active in conservatives. The part that allows you to step outside yourself, examine your own beliefs, and ask: “Wait, am I wrong about this?”That’s not a moral failing. That’s neuroscience.Their brain became what it was trained to feel. The chaos. The hate. The uncertainty. Not all of them chose their politics.Science says their childhood did. What This MeansThis research doesn’t mean conservatives are broken. It doesn’t mean they’re bad people. It means their brains developed in environments that prioritized fear-based survival over critical thinking and empathy. And here’s the uncomfortable truth: That’s really hard to undo.Because changing your brain requires:* Recognizing you need to change (self-awareness)* Being willing to sit with discomfort (emotional regulation)* Seeing the world from perspectives that contradict your survival instincts (empathy)All three of those things are harder when the parts of your brain responsible for them are underdeveloped. It’s not impossible. People do it. Therapy works. Exposure to different environments works. Consciously rewiring your brain works. But it requires wanting to change. And most people don’t want to change what feels normal. So What Do We Do?first you should subscribe If you’re reading this and you identify as conservative, I’m not here to tell you you’re broken.I’m here to tell you: You have more control than you think.Your brain is plastic. It can change. But only if you’re willing to do the uncomfortable work of questioning the fear-based narratives you’ve been taught.Ask yourself:* Am I reacting out of fear or out of critical thinking?* Can I see this situation from someone else’s perspective?* Am I defending this position because it’s right, or because it feels safe? And if you’re watching someone you love stay trapped in fear-based thinking—understand this:You’re not arguing with their logic. You’re arguing with their survival instincts.Facts won’t work. Shame won’t work. What might work? Safety. Consistency. Proof that the world isn’t as dangerous as they were taught to believe. But that takes time. And patience. And the willingness to meet them where they are.The Bottom LineYour politics aren’t just about policy. They’re about how your brain was wired to see the world. Some people see complexity, nuance, and shared humanity.Others see threats, enemies, and chaos.Neither is a choice you made as a child. But it is a choice you get to make now.References:* Schreiber, D., et al.
