Echeverría KEY FINDING: This systematic review screened recent heart rate variability literature to catalog how HRV indices are applied for diagnosis, severity staging, and disease tracking across cardiovascular, neurological, and psychiatric conditions. The authors found substantial inconsistency in which indices are reported and how confounding variables are handled across studies. SIGNIFICANCE: The authors propose a standardized roadmap for selecting and interpreting heart rate variability indices in future research, arguing that greater methodological consistency is needed before findings across studies can be meaningfully compared. Divergence of clinical and autonomic recovery in adolescent major depressive disorder: A 10-week prospective heart rate variability study with nocturnal electrocardiogram monitoring PUBLICATION: Journal of Affective Disorders AUTHORS: Haisi Chen, Xiaona Zhang, Shuning Hong, Zhenghe Yu, and Wanlin Chen KEY FINDING: In forty-three adolescent inpatients with major depressive disorder followed for ten weeks of routine treatment, depression and anxiety symptoms improved significantly, but only about seven percent achieved early clinical response. Heart rate variability deficits present at baseline did not normalize, and autonomic function instead shifted further toward sympathetic dominance by the end of the study. SIGNIFICANCE: Clinical symptom improvement and autonomic recovery may follow independent tracks in adolescent depression.
