This Week in Sport: LeBron Holds the NBA Hostage, NRL Coaching Shake-Up & Netball's NZ League on the Brink

from The Sports Playbook - Your Go-To Fast Sports News

The NBA is at a standstill. LeBron James, 41, is a free agent for the first time in years, and the league is effectively waiting on him — Commissioner Adam Silver has publicly urged him to make a decision so the schedule can be finalised. Five teams are in the mix: the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers have emerged as the frontrunners, with the Golden State Warriors sitting just behind. Daniel breaks down why James, who has made clear he wants championship contention over a payday, is holding all the leverage. In the NRL, the Dragons have locked in Dean Young as their permanent head coach on a two-year deal through 2027 and 2028, with the club holding an extension option with no performance benchmarks attached — beating out his close friend and former teammate Ben Hornby for the job. Meanwhile Anthony Seibold is returning to the game as an assistant coach with the PNG Chiefs under new head coach Willie Peters, part of a big week for the Chiefs that has also seen Joey Manu and Zac Lomax tour the club's facilities. In netball, the NSW Swifts have added Jo Harten as assistant coach, just a week after Dylan Nexhip's appointment as head coach — continuing a full rebuild of the Swifts' coaching structure for 2027. And this week's talking point: the ANZ Premiership, New Zealand's domestic netball competition, is in serious doubt, with all teams, players and coaches told that contracts won't be extended beyond July 31st while the Collective Bargaining Agreement remains unresolved.Looking ahead to the weekend: Formula 1 heads to the Hungarian Grand Prix, the last race before the summer break, with Kimi Antonelli holding a 45-point championship lead over Lewis Hamilton and 50 over teammate George Russell. The Diamonds open their Commonwealth Games campaign against Tonga on Saturday night, and in the NRL, the Knights host the Roosters on Friday in a top-8 clash headlined by Tedesco versus Ponga.Episode 23 of The Sports Playbook.
