In this podcast we speak to Thomas Mitchell of BiomeBank, an Adelaide-based company that is a global pioneer in an exciting new area of health science – microbial therapies.  Their mission is to produce therapies to treat and prevent various diseases – from digestive health issues to Parkinson’s – by replenishing the tiny microbes in your gut which are so important to your health and wellbeing.   Thomas Mitchell is a global biotech executive with significant experience in both discovery and development of microbiome drug products. Previously, he occupied leadership positions at both Finch Therapeutics and Microbiotica, key microbiome biotech companies in Boston USA and Cambridge UK. Thomas has managed a portfolio of assets in multiple indications – IBD, oncology, infectious disease, and neurodevelopment. This also involved leading an IBD biomarker discovery program valued at $534m. Notably, Thomas managed some of the first drug development programs for microbial therapies resulting in positive readouts in phased clinical trials; a milestone for the microbiome field.What is the microbiome?The microbiome is the complex community of organisms in your gut which play a role in maintaining our health. This complex community has a 100-fold increase on genetic expression complexity compared with the human genome and is considered a malleable organ in human health. In modern society there has been significant loss of gut microbial species which carry function important for human health.
