Three More Names Added to Calgary Fire Memorial | Calgary News

Three more Calgary firefighters—Captains Lorn Howes and Ronald A. Randen, and Deputy Chief Alton G. Mathers—were honored at the city’s annual memorial, their names added to the Walls of Memory after deaths from occupational cancers. Families, officials, and union reps gathered for a solemn ceremony marked by bell tolls symbolizing the end of a firefighter’s watch. Since 1885, Calgary has lost 84 firefighters, with 71 dying from illnesses likely caused by on-the-job exposure to hazardous materials—a silent, enduring cost of bravery.
