"Fear", these two verses imply, is central to the Christian's life of true faith and obedience. But what, exactly, does this "fear" mean? There is a kind of fear rooted in terror and a sense of dread, but yet another that is premised on reverence and awe. John Murray writes: "There is the dread or terror of the Lord and there is the fear of reverential awe. There is the fear that consists in being afraid; it elicits anguish and terror. There is the fear of reverence; it elicits confidence and love." "Fear", as a word, can mean a great many things, but only one of them applies most truly when it comes to the "fear" of the Lord.
