Through the Church Fathers: April 3

Today’s readings take us into the prophetic heart of Christian hope and the philosophical weight of evil. In Dialogue with Trypho, Chapter 31, Justin Martyr quotes at length from Daniel 7, showing that the Christ who was pierced will return in power and judgment—receiving an everlasting dominion from the Ancient of Days. This is not a new hope but the fulfillment of Israel’s Scriptures. At the same time, in Confessions, Book VII, Chapter 7, Augustine wrestles with the origin of evil, refusing to give up the goodness of God while crying out in inward torment.
