Through the Church Fathers: May 14

Today’s readings take us into the depths of divine order, fulfillment, and illumination. Justin Martyr challenges the Jewish interpretation of Malachi’s prophecy, showing how the true and pleasing sacrifices now offered to God are the prayers and Eucharistic thanksgivings of Christians spread across the world. In The Confessions, Augustine recalls a transcendent moment with his mother as they touch the edge of eternal joy in contemplation—just before she declares she is ready to leave this world, her earthly hopes fulfilled. Meanwhile, Aquinas explains why Scripture rightly uses the word “light” to describe spiritual realities: just as physical light reveals what is seen, spiritual light makes truth known.
