Thune discusses Senate budget bills; Tillis defends corporate interests.

from The Charlie James Show Podcast

The segment opens with host Charlie James reviewing dynamic and complex procedural regulations tied to South Carolina's special election calendar. Moving to a national focus, a video clip from Fox News features Senator John Thune, the Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, discussing his previous work on several reconciliation and defense funding bills that successfully passed through the Senate. Transitioning to other national legislative efforts, James reports on the House of Representatives advancing the Save America Act, but strongly criticizes establishment politicians, including Senator Tom Tillis, for pushing back against the bill. James details a confrontation where Tillis defended corporate and specialized labor lobby groups over the bill's criteria, which James frames as an outright betrayal of voter interests.

Charlie James: Here's what they need to do. Here is what they need to do. They need to change the name of the Save Act. They need to change the Save Act to the This is what the House needs to do. House needs to go back, pass the pass the Save Act, which they did again today, sending it to the Senate. The House needs to pass the Save Act, but change the name to the Senator Lindsey Graham Save America Act. Send it to the Senate and dare those Republican SOBs to vote against it. Dare them. Dare Mitch McConnell to vote against it. Dare Susan Collins or or Lisa Murkowski. Dare Tom Tillis to vote against it. Dare them. Do that. That's I mean, that I want you to listen. I mean, listen, this is this is because Senator Graham was planning on using uh reconciliation to pass the Save America Act. It would have required Thune to actually ignore the advice of the Senate Parliamentarian, which by the way, hum-hum, you don't have to follow the Senate Parliamentarian's advice. This is a Biden appointee. She shouldn't even be there. Thune should have gotten rid of her day one. The Democrats would have, if that was a Republican Parliamentarian. But let's take a look at what John Thune says. He's over on Fox News with Bill Melugin. Bill Melugin: Result of his death. One of the things he talked about was he was the chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, and he was the one who handled two of those reconciliation bills, the one big beautiful bill, and then recently $70 billion in funding for ICE and CBP after Democrats shut down DHS. He was working on a third reconciliation bill that potentially maybe get some elements of the Save America Act in it. Um, but the senator is gone now. What hap- What happens to that potential third bill, Senator? John Thune: Well, eventually we'll figure that out. Um, we've got to move forward. You know, obviously right now, um, we are all in the process of still processing and mourning, uh, Lindsey's loss, but, uh, on that, certainly on that level, the Budget Committee chairmanship, he did it with uh, with great, um, you know, professionalism and uh, ability to reach out and to work with everybody on our side of the aisle, many of whom have different opinions about how to deal with these big issues, but those were, uh, remarkable, consequential Charlie James: Okay. But then he goes on and to not answer the question. John Thune got to go. John Thune has got to go. So, the House has advanced the Save America Act, this happened today, advanced the Save America Act to the Senate. I want you to listen to Representative Tim Burchett. Tim Burchett: Up the bill to vote on it, it can um it's a procedural move, but it has to be done to get a a bill of the stature that we're trying to get and to attach the Save Act to it, so in the press. So anyway, um, and they thought both passed. Thank y'all for seeing me here. Charlie James: So, they they they both passed, but it's going to die in the Senate. It's going to die in the Senate because John Thune refuses to do away with the filibuster. And you've also got people like Tom Tillis who, by the way, is taking money Did you know that there was an illegal labor lobby? Oh, he got mad when uh he was questioned by Sarah Gonzalez. Sarah Gonzalez: And the illegal illegal labor lobby, is that why you voted against the Save America Act? Tom Tillis: Can you tell me who the illegal labor lobbyist? Sarah Gonzalez: Yes, it's uh contractors, general contractors, hospitality companies, industries, uh construction companies, and industries. Tom Tillis: What do you know about the Save- which which Save America Act are you talking about? Sarah Gonzalez: The one that you voted against, sir. Tom Tillis: Okay, and so you're asking me if I voted uh I was against it because Sarah Gonzalez: You're receiving almost $700,000 from these lobbyists. Tom Tillis: You have any remark- any idea what a remarkably silly question that is? For Sarah Gonzalez: I think it's a pretty important one. I th ...
