On today’s WTJX Radio NewsFeed: Today is Contract Day, the 148th anniversary of the Fireburn on St. Croix. We speak with Stephanie Chalana Brown, state director of the Division of Virgin Islands Cultural Education, about how Contract Day gives Virgin Islanders a language for examining labor today. The Health Department says it needs nearly $2 million from senators to pay off a debt in the territory's AIDS drug program, and it is warning that care for people living with HIV could be at risk if the bill goes unpaid. And after FEMA placed the territory's recovery work under an enhanced compliance review, Governor Albert Bryan Jr. says a meeting with the agency has opened the door to federal help with speeding up stalled projects and housing construction workers. Listen to these stories and more. Pictured: The Three Rebel Queens of the Virgin Islands statue on St. Thomas. The fourth queen, Susanna “Bottom Belly” Abrahamson, is not featured in the statue as her role as a leader in the Fireburn was not uncovered until 2004, when historian and former Senator Wayne James' archival research found historical documents in Denmark.
