Tiger Talk Episode 69 04/16/2019

from Tiger Talk Podcast by Northeast Mississippi Community College · host Will Kollmeyer, Northeast Mississippi Community College

In this sixty-ninth (69th) edition of the TigerTalk podcast presented by Northeast Mississippi Community College, host Will Kollmeyer welcomes Northeast vice president of instruction Dr. Michelle Baragona back to the podcast after a short hiatus. Baragona brings good news to Tiger Nation as she announces that the college is one of the nation's top leaders in education when it comes to technology. In just a few short years, the college has gone from seeing under 30 percent of its classes using Open Educational Resources to over two-thirds of its classes using OER resources and Northeast now has nearly 95 percent of its classes using some form of digital resource or the other. Baragona goes over what the OER and iPad initiative means to the college and also explains that it was the OER initiative that made it possible for Northeast to have its iPad 1:1 initiative. Through the use of OER materials and digital resources in the classroom, Northeast has been able to save students nearly $5 million over the last few years. In the second half of the podcast, Northeast co-director of the Northeast child care center Bonita Crump stops by to talk about the center's open house on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon on the first floor of Waller Hall and also about her forty years at Northeast. Crump points out to the single or working parent how important the childcare center is for a student returning to get their education and also lists the requirements for children to be in the child care at Northeast. In her 40-year reflection, Crump mentions the changes that she has seen at the college and how technology has advanced from her first few years at Northeast from the college having one printer/copier on campus in Stringer/Cartwright Hall to the technological advancement that we have today. Crump also recalls the bus transportation system that the college had in its first few decades on campus. Between the two interviews, Kollmeyer has one of the most comprehensive lists of events and happenings on the Northeast campus for the upcoming week, so if you have an event or happening on campus and want to be part of the Tiger Talk podcast, reach out to us.
