My name is Eric, and I’m the host of the show.  As a first responder I have witnessed an over reliance on Emergency Services during major events. I started a small preparedness company to get people prepared and able to look after themselves for at least 72 hours. Alan - I’m Alan, a safety trainer, first responder, security expert, and overall safety nerd. Scott - First Responder splitting my time between Southern and Northern Ontario, I like learning things, and I don’t accept that things will always carry on as they have just because it would be convenient to me. Eric - Demo started on the house. . . that's why I missed last week, clearing the final things on our main floor. Did some tightening of my network at home, updates, firewall review, etc Alan - teaching, working, training, and building. Putting my generator to the test tomorrow as I get my hydro panel changed over   Carmen- prepped the guest room for guests coming in about a week or so, canned up 24 quarts of peaches, 18 pints of hamburger and with my husband got the trenches dug for irrigation in our yard! I think my house is on a bedrock of a gravel pit! We also harvested the potatoes, which weren’t as good as I had hoped and yesterday put all my things away from the fire pack up. the recent forest fire was only 3 km from my door..but across a whole 3 subdivisions and a gully…but we might have been evacuated so we packed up. That was eye opening for me! What do you actually take? I feel I made the right decisions in those few hours we were on alert but I’m redoing so so much now!  (Make sure you mention what these MAG and WAG letters mean.. not everyone knows what these stand for) CB  New Segment:W.A.M the Wide Area MAG Scott - We all love learning things, and while there are some very intelligent people around here (present company excluded), there are lots of smart people out there with skills and talents we all want to learn from.  We would love to hear from you at [email protected].     Who doesn’t love beef jerky, so we’d love to talk about food dehydration.  Also, we want to look at preppers from around the world - I was talking to a friend with South African connections, and they take their preps seriously.     Don’t be intimidated, you don’t have to be an expert on the air, just tell us about things, even off air.  If you have a great website or resource to share, we want to know.  The whole idea is to share knowledge with our larger likeminded group.   Main Topic -  Eric - Alright, it’s time to move onto the main topic of the show. (Each host insert talking points here) Scott: (I will redo all the stuff I’d typed up previously for this episode, main concept: having a well rounded set of skills is key.  Plan: talk about the obvious ones, food, water, shelter, defence, equipment repair, medical, add points to those as hosts see fit, then start talking about other skills/points we would like in our MAG.) This topic came out of a discussion with a few of my good friends, we were discussing the concept of ‘The Competent Man’ (I make no gender references here, the Competent Woman is far more common, cough - Carmen), it’s actually a concept in Literature to describe the stock character who just seems to know how to do everything.  The quote that started all this, from Wikipedia, by Robert A HEINLEIN.   A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. — Robert Heinlein, Time Enough for Love   For our eyes only—— > (Drat I can’t program a computer 😕) Carmen    In a situation where self-reliance, or Mutual Reliance is the key to survival, an entire set of skills will be needed.  It’s great that you can defend yourself, but doesn’t help if you freeze to death because you can’t split firewood.  It’s great that you can grow tons of food, but if you die of an infected wound not having any medical knowledge…  You have a generator, but don’t know how to replace the spark plug…    So the idea is that as a MAG, you have a whole set of useful skills at the entire group’s disposal.  I’d love to have Ben Peterson around to help with wood gasifiers and repairing things.  Carman’s canning knowledge would be an asset to any group.     I figure we’ll cover some of the low hanging fruit, water, food, shelter, defence, power, medical, then we can move into some other ideas which maybe we having thought of previously:   WATER:  Procuring it, cleaning it, storing it, camping filters FOOD: Gardening, livestock, hunting, trapping, preserving it!   SHELTER: Security and warmth, energy efficiency   DEFENCE:  Knowing equipment, reloading, repairs   POWER: Generators, solar, fuel storage, wood gasifiers   MEDICAL: First aid, longer term ‘there’s no help coming’ medical needs, reusing medical equipment meant to be single use.  ‘Home remedy’ cures using things more easily available or procurable.    REPAIRS: Having tools, spare parts, the knowledge to use them.  Electrical, water systems, plumbing, welding? Vehicle repair, or modification.   COMMS AND INFORMATION: Ham radio might be helpful knowing things   TRADE AND BARTERING: The ability to swap assets for other assets to meet both parties’ needs.  Having extra of something potentially valuable to get something you had no idea you’d need.  Ian had made a comment on Firewood during the ‘Year-Long Emergency’ episode that made me think about that for the first time.     WHAT OTHER SKILLS WOULD YOU LIKE IN YOUR MAG? It’s hard being a supermodel… Carmen- You Missed the fibre and needle arts.. making yarn, threads, fabric and knowing how to sew, how to make clothes and even shoes, making blankets by knitting, crochet and quilting,  and also knots knowledge such as tying nets, making rope and thin threads for use in trapping and even fishing.  Ways of connecting with local, likeminded people and creating, or adding to your MAG? Local interest groups, HAM radio, Outdoor clubs, 4x4 truck clubs,  Carmen- Maybe even the comments section in videos on YouTube and Facebook, Facebook groups is a double edged sword but I have met a few locals on there…sometimes you just get texting and it stays that way… Alan - Most SAR people are generally well-prepared and value good planning. Just be wary of what information you’re giving out before you know who’s getting it. Eric - Listening to your most recent episode and perked up when you mentioned that “X” number of Covid exposures were linked to the Calgary Stampede. Is there contact tracing done for all exposures in Canada ?   I’m in the US. Cop in a major East Coast resort city and works in a Emergency Room. I had Covid last year and not one single official even verbally asked where I thought I got it.   Sgt Mac VA   Alan - Hello I just listened to the show with Carmen on canning and had some questions you could hopefully pass on to her or answer yourself. My wife does very good soups and stews and we would like to can them.  The soups have bacon, ham, beef and sometimes dairy in them. With everything being pre cooked when she made the soup would you still need to pressure cook them or could you get away with just a water bath? And would the "best before" date be the same as normal canned food? We already do water bath for vegetables, apple juice and apple sauce but never attempted pressure canning.      I enjoy listening to your podcast instead of the radio and find it on par with my way of thinking. Always looking for better ways and different ideas. I was a volunteer firefighter for 10 years. Try to target shoot and hunt when time and budget allows.
