Is your cord like a little, you know, taut? Taut, yeah. That's fine. Okay, just checking.

I taut cord. It did look taut and so I was worried that it was taut day. Taut, people are pull. It's taut.

The wires are being stretched. Mmm. God. Yeah.

That's the truth. I'm not going to build up a lot of rompressions. We just have to make it clear that we are definitely laboring under the weight of what is happening in Minneapolis right now. And I fucking hate white supremacists.

I hate fucking accelerationists. And all those creeps that live around Minneapolis going in there and all the fucking creeps are just being creepy and fucking trying to gaslight people into believing that what's happening right now is not fucking white supremacists being fucking creeps. So yeah. Hello and welcome to Tiny Tunes Tuesday.

The musical subsidiary of the Ron Prashant's podcast. This week, a tale of two crayons. One crayon, a band of compelling in Washington in 1993. The other, a group of teenagers from Australia in 1995, both naming themselves crayon.

Crayon in Bellingham, Washington. Crayon in Australia. Blue Pays tribute to both. Thanks for the cassette crayon.

And hey, crayon Bellingham. I enjoyed your seven inch. He enjoyed your seven inch. Hey!

Should have given that more time. Enjoying your seven inch. How about over here now? We can hear what that was presented to us.

Something about crayons? Yeah. So anyway, I've been looking through my archives lately as I always do. Loudly clanking around through bins of cassette tapes.

I'm sending boxes of cassette tapes all the time and looking for stuff. And I've also been going through my old seven inches because we had our pop up shop for the Barlow Family General Store over Christmas and I sold some singles. So I've been going through my old singles and listening to them. And I've found this single by a band called crayon.

I'm like, that's interesting. And I also have a cassette by a band called crayons. I found both. Amazing.

One is from a band, the seven inches from a band from Bellingham, Washington, from 1993. And they had one song in this record that I really liked. It's called Snap Tight Wars. And the other is a cassette that was actually from these very, very young Australian fans from 1995.

Oh, wow. And I just, I thought I, and I listened to the cassette, which I did not do original hit. So just before you get in, so when they sent you this cassette, what was it that they gave it to me? Like, what was on it?

Like, was it like, oh, here, Lou, listen to our band? Or did they send you like personal messages on there? Like, what is it? Well, I could explain it more.

I think what's going to happen first is my cover of the crayon, Bellingham, Washington. So, but there was in 1995, I played an in-store at a place called Waterfront Records in Australia. And I can't remember whether it was sitting over in Melbourne. I didn't even see it.

Oh, oh my God. Someone in Australia. Let us know. One of the big cities, one of the big smokes.

And, but they had a contest for kids to get into the show. And the shows that we did play work for 18 and over audiences. So the kids that came to this in-star were large. They were young and I didn't realize.

I kind of knew there was a contest, but anyway, the contest was to use like, Sabot of Song names in an essay. Oh. But these kids made a cassette instead of doing the essay. And then they gave me the cassette.

But that's coming up. That's so involved. I mean. Yeah.

And it's super cute and it's going to play after, um, it's going to play after my cover of this crayon, Bellingham, Washington. Oh, okay. From 1993. Did you record this cover already?

Is it done? Or is it playing live? I was in the track version of it. I fired up the floor track.

So, commense. Here we go. In-face. Fake fiber snaps.

I say more. You say freedom. They say, come on and join us where the clock's all easy. They've been, they've been so.

They are friends and they let all boys sleep over. Imagine my word. Disregard me. They are your friends and they're not really understanding.

Which endless dearest words of the early show. Concentrate. Distantio. It was a snap-tay oars.

A cover of a crayon song. I like your cover better than the original. Because you played me at the original the other night. The original, it was on a record label called Harriet Records, which were based in Boston.

Yeah. And it was a lot of these really like, I wish I could really sum up what this, there was this kind of a scene of bands that played music that was sort of overtly childlike. Mm. And then they had this kind of, this childlike approach to the music.

It was often very simple. The band that kind of led all of this was called Beat Happening. Okay. And it was a very charismatic vocalist, Calvin.

And people love this band and there was a lot of music that came out at that time that was kind of this faux naive. I don't know if that's the right way to say it. Kind of approach. Childlike approach.

It was like there was just a bunch of bands like that. And crayon were one of the only ones that I kind of liked. Okay. Did you like Beat Happening?

I didn't like Beat Happening as much as everyone else did. Although I think that Calvin Johnson, the lead singer, is kind of a genius. Because he produced some amazing records. He actually has a really good aesthetic.

But I never embraced the band that much. Okay. It's very much like a post-Johnathan Richmond style of music, which can honestly rub me the wrong way. I know that, yes.

And I say that as like someone who was making very low-fi recordings. But I think it's almost, it's not really the recording style. It's more of the message or intention behind it. Yeah.

What you didn't like. I didn't. But one thing I find so interesting about this band and why I wanted to cover it. Chrayon cassette excerpts.

Oh, oh shit. Oh shit. Oh, this is cool. Five wrist laughs.

Come on. Come on. You weren't ready. We're ambitious.

Throwing these two things together. Like, I read it into the mic. Oh, no, no. Okay. Look, Jesse and Collie had dreams of witnessing the pure brilliance to send her life in the flesh.

They'd be waiting two years and two days for a tour. And where was the app that they were playing? Only at the same show, though, and not for a few years. Nice.

So this is the crayontape crayontape. Let's be set you. Oh, my gosh. I'm just playing little parts of it.

How old were they? They were obviously under 18. Under 18. Aww.

And they wanted to go see Sabato, but we were playing the big club and they couldn't go. So they were trying to get into it. What about us? Collie explained.

It's just a rule. What do you expect with the American very world? I just decided here I know an eruption, but you change it to a dozen, a commission club. That's a form of protest.

Yep. So they're talking about chaining himself to the club as a form of protest. But before you take this, use an exclusive similar piece of performance that the water bar in the store came to me to make a king. A competition was being run.

And those with the best choice, we have to attend. Wonderful, wonderful. That year old. That year old.

That year old. That year old. That year old. That year old.

That year old. That year old. That year old. That year old.

We're all about parties with the prince. What? What about people who are doing it? Truly great things.

I've got quite a joke. We'll send you a tape about how to make the corners. Little bit of a joke. Oh my gosh, I love this so much.

How funny is it? It's a joke. How's that? They've got to work because no house is general.

They are instruments. The never going to stop going. We're going through the whole thing. We're going through the whole thing.

We're going through the whole thing. They're sitting there taking off the thing that's hoping that one day soon we'll go on with the I'm just reading the dollar, straining out. So that's the introduction on the cassette. Wow.

And then what? They play a couple of songs I'll play. Oh, of their own music then? Yeah.

It's super sweet. I love how they dabbled their story there, their intro with the song titles. I think that was part of the contest. Oh, okay.

And that in-store was one of the most unique experiences I've ever had because we were... You'll never know why. Oh, they're saying your name. Yes.

Ha ha. Keep it simple. Yeah. So I was driving up to the sin store.

Oh, fun. There were kids running next to the car when I drove up to the sin star. Oh my gosh. That is like never.

The Beatles. Oh, this is my version of it. What they said you? I recorded that on the- So you did a cover of their song?

I did it on the new cassette recorder that I was giving to the last week. I was giving to Tony. Tony cassette recorder. Wow.

That's adorable. Yeah. That's really sweet. And I wonder where are they now?

You know? One of them be listening to this podcast. I hope so. I don't know.

What do they do? What became of crayon Australia version? They did a- this is part of their cover of my song Feel Good, which was kind of a deep cut at the time. This is from the Canadian EP that we feel good.

They really plowed right through it. God bless. I mean, oh yeah, this song kind of sounds like you. Sorry.

That's not like when you're old tapes. Maybe I really was a purveyor of the faux naive child-like music. Wow. Gosh.

Amazing. And so you like were handed this cassette tape crayon. I remember crayon. And then you brought it all the way back to the States and hear it is in Massachusetts now.

Yeah, I guess. That's the story. Is this crayon again? Yeah.

Bye bye. Thanks for listening. The lyrics of that song are bye bye. Thanks for listening.

I hope we weren't too much trouble. Aww. What a goodness. Who knew that they were- I wonder- Give me so much joy so many years later.

Wow. So many years later. I wonder if that was like their mom who read the script or something, you know, or like a friend, like who did that part? I don't know.

And I'm kind of- I'm confused as to the- who Jessie and Paul. And that fake vibeslap. I know. We're not used to- We're not used to- Almost done yet.

Almost done. Almost done. They're timinates. You have the cassette tape cover?

Yeah. Here's the cover. Oh, I'm see. Wow.

This is what a- Oh, little bubble handwriting. Thanks for listening. I hope we weren't too much trouble. I hope we weren't too much trouble.

I hope we weren't too much trouble. I hope we weren't too much trouble. Yeah. Wow.

That's- we should scan that. It's so adorably written as this crayon are Angela P. Ringwald plus Robert J. Parsons, but then who's Jimmy and- I don't know.

I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. It's a bit of a mystery.

Did I just make up those people? Like it was part of a story? Yeah. It was like a little short story.

Well, well. Oh, yeah. Aren't you just cutie? That's adorable.

I mean, I just guess that maybe Angela did the artwork. I don't want to assume that- You're profiling them. I might be recorded on two crappy tape recorders, June 95. That's a reference to the credits of the- of Palito on the- Oh.

You're living all over me record. It says, you know, by loo on two crappy tape recorders. Oh, I don't know that's on the actual- Yeah. On the LP sleeve.

Yeah. Should I? You're living all over me. It's probably the most seminal LP that I've ever played on.

Okay. I'm going to go back and really get to know. I like that one. I enjoy it.

I like that album. Oh, yeah. You're looking over me. Yeah.

That was a little bit zero. It's tasty. Yeah. Well, I think I just will, you know, I don't even know what to say.

It's so hard to articulate, but I guess I hope we gave you 15 minutes of a distraction in what is Shirley a very difficult time. I mean, I'm born in Minneapolis, you know, I'm from the Twin Cities. That's my hometown. This is like, it's also my own neighborhood where I lived.

My last apartment I lived where Renee Good was killed. And that's, it's so sad. It's just so, so sad. And I'm just thinking of everyone.

And I'm also, I'm hoping for a different world. I'm hoping I think things could be different than this. And I wish we, I wish things weren't so violent. I wish we didn't have like thugs wearing masks and, you know, with their, whatever.

Yeah, I'm not excited about that. I'm not excited about them corralling all of the, all the fucking miscreants and fucking white supremacists into a fight. It's just a nightmare. It's really a nightmare.

Not into them, rounding those guys up and ticing them all with just giving them a bunch of money and handing them guns. I think it's a bummer. It's like a real, like just a real solid fucking ancient bummer. Well, there's real life consequences, you know, and not just to what happened to like Renee, these immigrant families being torn apart.

And it's just, there's a different way. There's got to be a different way. And this is, you know, this is horrific and it's disgusting and I'm disgusted. Yeah.

So yeah, on that note, we just have to, it just, it sickens me. And so it's been so hard to, you know, I've, I've, I've been tormented by the specter of white supremacy for my entire life. What I learned about it as a kid and I went to, I mean, as you did, I went to like, you know, really mixed schools. I've had a lot of experience and, you know, being a kid and American and also traveling and kind of, and I, you know, my family has been in the United States for, at this point centuries.

Wow. Yeah. And, you know, fuck white supremacists are probably none of you are listening. Got to hope not.

I mean, you don't really need to be here. Because we like to have fun. I like, I like fun. I like fun.

Well, we like people to live. Yeah. And I definitely like people to live. Mm hmm.

And then, uh, I like people to feel safe. Yeah. And, you know, I'm sad. I'm sad for dumb people.

I'm sad for, for people having to live through this. And I'm bummed I've got, you know, I've got kids that I want protected. You know, and I'm, it, it makes me immeasurably sad. Yeah.

And anxious. And I've lived with this for a very, very long time. Yeah. Kind of paranoid of this tweets.

I know. Anyway. Well, yeah. Give me all your impressions.

Your thoughts, your words, your time. It's all about communication. Oh, the fucking time. Stuff.

Fucking communicating. Don't be afraid to speak your mind.
