This week, Lou breaks his promise to me and mini-music Monday guy to never play the same song twice. He's already broken our hearts once, and he's going to break it again today by playing Soul and Fire again. Lou, why? Why you gotta do this to us?
Why? There's a good reason behind it. Mm-hmm. Mini-music Monday guy or?
Tiny Tunes Tuesday? Maybe I think they're twins. Mini-music Monday guy. Tiny Tunes Tuesday guy.
They're definitely twins. Yeah, they're twinsies. So why the heck are you gonna play Soul and Fire again? Because we're gonna do a live sub-stack on Wednesday.
Wednesday. And this is where Adele's gonna, like Adele and I, she's gonna kind of... We're gonna share the little camera, the phone. We're gonna hold up the phone, and we're gonna go live, kind of like what we used to do if you've been on lose Instagram for a few years during the pandemic.
The glam-demic. Gosh, we actually went live. I don't even know how many times, but... A lot.
It was actually really fun. It became kind of this really cool experience. We did a ton of them. We did.
People actually really helped me out, helped us out. Yes, I'd say it went both ways, right? They tipped. They tipped.
And they also, we were kind of like in community then too, was like you were still doing shows, so that was really cool. Yeah, it was really cool. Yeah, we liked it. So we were really excited actually.
This is a new thing that Substack is doing. They've had, I think... Raw impressions. Okay.
Interruptions. Backtrack. Retraction time. Backtracking.
Retraction time. I got something to say. Okay. Now this wasn't something that I said in the podcast, but yesterday our friend Alexis was here and we had a very long conversation.
We were, we told her a long story. Yes. And in the story, we talked about a friend of mine, Colleen, who had met you. And I said her name was Colleen Dewhurst.
I think I just with it together now. And I was like, insistent upon it. No, I know Alexis. She actually listened.
So if you're out there, Alexis, her name is not Colleen Dewhurst. That's an actress. Yes. Actually, Anne of Green Dills.
Yes. I was just going to say this. Oh my God, that's Marilla. It's Marilla.
Colleen Dewhurst is sort of severe looking actress, but she actually, she was a very good actress. Oh my gosh. She was severe and terrible in that show. She was a great, and she was married to George C.
Scott twice. Who's that? The famous actor. He played Patton.
He's super famous. He's super duper dead. Like a long time. I don't know if she's...
She's a very masculine actor. And he, they were married and divorced. And then they got married and divorced again. I always loved that.
I love that too. Huh. Wow. I love Colleen Dewhurst and Anne of Green Gables.
I was like, I could just, I never tire. Colleen, I'm not going to say Colleen's last name, but she was from Colleen Dewhurst. Oh my gosh. Can I just say that's hilarious because you said Colleen Dewhurst.
I was there for that moment. And I didn't question it at all. I'm so like, I can really be very, um, what's the word naive trusting? I'm like, yeah, well, he said, I don't know.
Gullible. Gullible. Just like me. We're both really gullible.
Can be. Yeah. Anyway, so we're going to do a live substec on Thursday. Wednesday.
Wednesday. Hello. That tracker text. She's so bad at it.
I'm voting things. Do not say that other... And I'm not going to clean my studio. No, we're going to, I think we should just be real, guys.
I can't believe we're going to show. I'm going to show, when I get a hold of the camera, I'm going to show everybody like, I'm going to go into the corners of this place. Really? The dust bunnies, the collections of picks and wires.
If you're at all curious, you should tune in. What's that whistle for? Who breaks a promise? Oh, in three lonely heartbroken whistles.
I wish I could whistle well. Discovery. Divine intervention. Cruel, cruel change.
I look pain and rejection. And when you walk away, think of all the joy we shared. If you decide you need me, I'll be wondering if I care. Not there to soothe your soul.
Friend, tender friend. I think our love is coming to an empersuator. Graduation. You share her heart.
You're part her soul. It's this confusion. Come to me again. Saying goodbye was so much fun.
When you walk away, feel freedom in your heart. There's joy in letting go. You're free to find a love apart. It's when I lose control.
I need a kind, forgiving friend. If you ever want to love me again. When you walk away, feel freedom in your heart. There's joy in letting go.
You're free to find a love apart. Because when I lose control, I need a kind, forgiving friend. But I think our love's coming to an end. Bob's coming to an end.

I had the thought. Okay. And when I knew that I was going to play the song again, I thought I'd been having regrets lately. When I go back and listen to old songs of mine, that I didn't put three choruses in all of my songs, because nobody cares about it.
This is super generalization. And there's many exceptions. Okay. Yeah.
However, you got to put three choruses in a song. Okay. It's kind of like, it's a form. It's like, it is almost like, it's written in the stars, this formula.
It's what sinks into people. It's got a song to be memorable, to be classic, has to have three choruses. And when I was a kid and I wrote songs, I almost purposely limited every song to two choruses, thinking that three choruses was too much and was like a sellout. And now when I listen to classic songs, and then also J.
Mascis' songs, his songs, almost all of them, from the beginning, at least three. And then when you, any pop song you hear these days, especially, now that the formula is really so baked in. But I have these decent songs. I have hundreds of songs.
It's ridiculous that I even have to repeat one for this episode. I'm sorry. Tiny Tunes Tuesday guy and many music Monday guy, the twins. Anyway, so I originally, when I wrote the song, I did the end to chorus was, call me if you ever want to love me again.
Yeah, that's the first time I've heard that. It was originally that. But then by the time that I recorded the song, I was kind of like, I had a new girlfriend. Yeah.
Yeah, I better cut that line out of there. So I was like, not only that, but I also thought I was like, this needs to be stronger. It needs to be, it's a better way to resolve the song because the whole song is about really accepting a breakup. That's really what the song is about.
And that's the strength of the song. And the original chorus was just kind of going, that kind of classic, Lou Barlow. It's willing to wait. Yeah, willing to wait, nonsense, where it's like where you're still like, you hurt me, but take me back.
I hope when you change your mind, you break up with your, when you break up with the lawyer, come on, you know, I'm like, that kind of stuff. Anyway, so I'm going to hopefully play a better version of the song on Wednesday because my headphones were falling off my fucking head while I was trying to record that. And it was not the best version. Can I just say, it was a really cool version, because well, you, I've never seen you play it that way.
You played it very slowly with this intention. It was really interesting. You were like really letting each line and you know, have its space. It was cool.
I'm thinking, oh, this is interesting watching watching you. And I thought, that's different. And then it's not the same song because you added that other chorus. So it's not technically a repeat.
No. Yeah. Take that. Take that.
I'd like to say this. That's where it's where they understand it. They, they, we, we're hearing Soul and Fire because when we were approached about contributing to the sub-stack live music series, sorry guys. I'm part of a series.
Yeah, it's part of a series. So my brain, I'm putting it all together. They were like, Hey, let us know what you're going to do. And I asked you what do you want to do.
And you just said Soul and Fire. So it's just like it just came up. And so that is what he's going to do. I think it will be really fun because we've been talking anyway about Lou sort of branching into doing videos of like showing you guys how to do how to play the songs.
Yeah. And I love that idea. Ultimately, I want to do like videos of the bass, bass parts I play with dinosaur junior. Exactly.
Yeah. Are really curious about people. You know, that's the, the most people seem, obviously, because dinosaur juniors of, you know, we're a legacy act at this point. And people are here and, and kids, especially who are discovering how to try it.
Kids who are discovering their instruments and wondering how I play bass. I'd like to, I'd like to kind of, because people say things to me, like, you play all chords, don't you? Like I do and I don't. I mean, you know, and I'd like to like show, I'd like to kind of show what my technique is.
Yeah. And then also with Soul and Fire. And like, I use a different kind of tuning, you know, there's fun stuff like that. I'm gonna play it on electric on Wednesday.
Okay. At 2 p.m. Eastern time. It's a point of whistle.
So this is especially disappointing episode. I'm trying to talk about it on Tuesday. Of course shit. Of course shit.
Lou, I'm disappointed. There was many music Monday guy. And you know how soundtrack man feels. But you gotta do that this time.
Thank you for listening. So go ahead. Please become a free subscriber to the Barlow Family General Substack. And I'll encourage you to do it because honestly, Substack is becoming, I think, a very interesting kind of breath of fresh air too in the world of social media.
It's really writing based, but they're adding this live component, which I really like. Well, that was hard. When we first got involved, one of the reasons that I thought it was interesting was that Patti Smith does almost exclusively these videos. Really?
Yeah. She just hits her chord and just talks to the camera. Yeah. And she did a real sweet one the other day that you really liked with.
I got to watch. She was, I think, one of the first ones in the new series. We'll have like a little poster we'll put so you guys can see what we're talking about. And I watched her and Lenny.
Lenny K. Yeah, Lenny K. Do her guitarist forever. A Substack live.
And it was incredible. I just stopped what I was doing in the kitchen and watched it and it was very moving. And she was just on her bed at home and they were talking. That's all the pictures.
They were just incredible. Yeah. And I loved it. I love the intimacy with it.
I loved seeing the people commenting and feeling things in real time. So there's just so much about it that appeals to me and to us, I think we're both very like, this is something we're excited about. We like it. And because they're encouraging us to be raw.
And which, you know, we're already there, right? So our podcast is Ron Prussians. We're ready to go and we're ready to just be ourselves and we want you guys to join us. So that one's going to be free.
I'm not gonna dust anything. We're not gonna do anything. And so you can bring your questions. I'll try to read them off while it's happening.
And yeah, so you'll get a little tour, a little place on fire and kind of we'll try to show you how it plays it again. And so 2 p.m. this week on Wednesday, April 9th. So follow the link, join the sub stack and we'll see you guys there.
All righty. Bye. Okay. Goodbye.
