When Titanic vanished beneath the North Atlantic in the early hours of April fifteenth, nineteen twelve, the nightmare did not end. It changed shape. Hundreds of survivors huddled in lifeboats, scattered across the freezing dark, while the Carpathia steamed toward them in answer to Titanic’s wireless distress calls.The sea was littered with debris and voices, but the full scale of loss was still hidden by darkness and cold. The Carpathia arrived to a scene without order. Lifeboats bobbed alone or in clusters. There was no single wreck site, only fragments: people in blankets, bits of wood, and silence broken only by cries and the wind. Rescue began in confusion and exhaustion.
