TLRS Ep. 9: Latino Veterans Oral History Project

from The Little Radio Show

In today’s episode we have an interview with Mikaela Selley, Hispanic Collections Archivist at the Houston Public Library. Mikaela talks with us about the Latino Veterans Oral History Project and the “Remembering World War II: Houston's Latino Veterans” exhibit. The exhibit is on view until November 14, 2015 at the Houston Public Library. The Latino Veterans Oral History Project will be housed at the Houston Oral History Project when it’s completed. Latino television mainstay Don Francisco (born Mario Kreutzberger) is retiring and Sábado Gigante is ending, with the final episode airing on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 8 pm EST. The show has been on the air 53 years. We talk about our memories and experiences with the show. Horror director Wes Craven passed away. Wes created the very successful “Scream” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” film franchises, among many others. We talk about our experiences with the movies, and the hole he leaves in the entertainment industry. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we talk about Latinos who have influenced us, including: Sandra Cisneros (author of “House on Mango Street”), labor activist Dolores Huerta, actress Maria Elena Velasco (known for her La India Maria character), Victor Villaseñor’s (author of “Rain of Gold”), and actress Salma Hayek (best known for her roles in Robert Rodriguez’s “Desperado” and “From Dusk Till Dawn” movies). “The Little Radio Show” is on HMSNetRadio.org on Thursdays at 2 pm (CST). The show hosts are Sandra Fernandez (@sandrasays), Juan Alanis (@juanofwords), and Anjelica Cazares (@la_anjel). Subscribe to the Podcast (RSS) or to the iTunes channel and keep up with new episodes.
