This narrative follows Joseph Wayne, a man who migrates to California to establish a homestead fueled by a primal, spiritual obsession with the land. Upon the death of his father, Joseph believes the patriarch's spirit has inhabited a great oak tree on his ranch, leading him to perform pagan-like rituals to ensure fertility and prosperity. His brothers and their families join him, but tensions arise as his brother Burton condemns Joseph’s growing idolatry and eventually kills the sacred tree. Following a series of familial tragedies and a devastating, persistent drought, the land begins to wither and die, forcing the rest of the family to abandon the ranch. Joseph remains behind, retreating to a mystical glade in a final, desperate attempt to commune with the earth's spirits. In a climactic act of self-sacrifice, he offers his own life to the land, an act that coincides with the return of the life-giving rain.
